Kelly,
I read about your father's passing in the Washington Post. Please accept my sincere sympathy. I remember meeting him when he came to DC when we worked together. I remember him being a kind, generous and funny man - and the first federal judge to break bread with me.
I have thought of you fondly over the years and remember the warm collegial bond we shared while working for the US Congress. I am still in DC.
Warmly,

Dearest Joan,
How devastated we were to hear about Terry. We learned of his passing while out of town. How shocked and saddened we are. Our hearts go out to you and your children. Our community has lost a great man. Terry was not only the epitomy of a brilliant, honest, dedicated, fair, and compassionate man, but comedic too! He knew the secret to a well-lived life and left his mark. He will be sorrowfully missed by so many.
Please tell David how sorry we are!
Joan, what will stay with me forever when I think of Terry and you, is through all the years I waited on you I felt like I was in the company of a couple on their first date. No matter how many years had passed, the two of you still held hands, always looked into one another's eyes, laughed and were so playful. I can still picture your smiles and the sparkles in your beautiful eyes. You were so attentive to one another. He adored you, and I know you felt the same. It was very special to be witness to the love you had shared for another.
This memory will forever remain in my heart!
Terry is known for his outstanding judicial presence, but I knew the man who was a loving husband,a devoted father and a kind friend.
I look forward to seeing you at the restaurant again. Please let us know if we can help you in anyway.
His memory will live on forever.
Our Prayers are with you,always

Joan, my condolences to you and your family.
Dad remembers, before Terry and his mother moved to Riverwest, he and Aunt Jean, after she divorced, moved back in with Grandma, Uncle Roy and Dad. For almost sixteen years they all helped raise Terry. Dad remembers how it was his "job" to take Terry for walks around the block to "get him out of Jean's hair" for a while, and how Uncle Roy would get up early every Sunday morning to help Terry deliver the Sunday paper. They all lived on very little back then, especially during the war, but they were with Terry all the way.
They were all proud of what Terry accomplished.

To the family of Terry,
I practiced law in Milwaukee for 39 years before I retired and knew Terry most of those years. We often had laughs together because we looked enough alike that we were mistaken for each other. In fact one day I walked into a circuit court room when a trial before another judge was in progress, waiting for a recess so I could get the judge to sign an order in a different matter. The judge, whom I did not know well at all, stopped the trial and waived me up to the bench---when I got there he said: "You are not Judge Evans!". When I later told Terry that story he had a great laugh about it and told me it was too bad that I was saddled through life with his looks.
He was a good and wonderful man with a terrific wit and sense of humor and I, along with many many others, will miss him.

My condolences to the Evans Family and all of the people who will miss him. Terry was the first friend I made in the early days at Riverside HS in September of "54". Although our lives took different paths; we shared a common bond from some 55 years ago. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Terry. He will be missed but remembered. To Evans family and friends, it is a sad loss. I have met Judge Evans on a field trip to chicago. He was nice enough to let the class sit in his chair and show us what he did. And he thought it was funny when i said the bears were guilty. It is very sad to hear that he has passed away. He is in a better place and he will be missed. My teacher (Ms.Bailey) knew him and she will miss him, too. God bless Judge Evans

Terry & I attended high school during the same time. He was a fantastic runner. I remember running cross country against him over by Riverside and he passed me twice on the same hill because I never quite made it up that hill:-). We would run into each other over the years and talk about the "good old days." I will always remember him as a warm, caring, unassuming person. This community has benefitted greatly from the fact that he use his immense talents for the greater good while maintaining his love for people and this city. May this good and decent man Rest In Peace. Howard Fuller

I first met Terry when he was a Freshman at Marquette. He was a nice young kid who could really run. We usually disagreed on politics; but Terry remained one of the nicest people that I ever met. Joan, David, Christine and Kelly,
Please accept my deepest and heart-felt condolences. Judge Evans was kind enough to hire me as one of his law clerks and I had the pleasure of serving him from 2001 to 2002. During that time and in the years after, I grew to love and respect him because of his kindness and unfailing good humor. Although he was unquestionably a brilliant and committed judge, it was clear that his family was the light of his life. The most vivid memories I have of him are of the twinkle in his eye when he would relate the latest adorable remark Olivia or one of the other grandchildren had made.
In the years since my clerkship, the Judge remained a role model and friend to me. I will miss him terribly, as I know you will. I am simply grateful that I was able to know such a great man.
With deepest sympathy,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I met Judge Evans in 1976 when my ex-husband decided to keep our children. Judge Evans resided over the first, early hearing and requested the right to be the judge through the whole process. I didn't find out until it was over that I was the first open lesbian who ever went to court for her children in Wisconsin. Judge Evans decision was so well written and I did come home with my children. I never forgot about him. He was kind, funny and compassionate. You and your family are in my prayers.

I will miss his friendship and never forget our relationship. My prayers and heart go out to you and your family at this time.

You don't know me, but 22 years go, my soon-to-be husband I were waiting for our Friday night wedding to start at the Milwaukee Athletic Club. It became apparent that our scheduled judge was a no-show. Unable to reach that judge, an attorney friend placed a call to Terry Evans. No questions asked, he came in from yard work on the Friday night of Memorial Day weekend, took a quick shower and performed a wedding at the last minute for someone he didn't know. A very special memory.

I am a new lawyer who never had the privilege of meeting Judge Evans. However, from first semester of my 1L year until now, I had a daily ritual of visiting the 7th Circuit web site hoping that I could enjoy my lunch while reading a just-released Evans' opinion. He was my favorite jurist because no matter how complex or mundane the issues at hand, Judge Evans' opinions were not only enlightening, but also just plain fun to read, peppered with popular references to movies and music. I will truly miss my lunches with Judge Evans, and my heart goes out to his family and fellow jurists.
