Tom and I attended the same school, St. Marys University. He graduated in 1971 and for me it was 1970. During my senior year he lived in the dorm room next to me. We had attended a few parties. Shortly after Tom graduated in 1971, we both attended another friends wedding in Iowa. When I got married in 1977, Tom was a groomsman. A couple events occurred that drew us apart. I hadnt talked to Tom in decades. Too bad as he was a nice guy.

So sorry to hear of Tom's passing. Knew him prior to his moving to Appleton. He was one of the good guys. We had lots of laughs together and always appreciated his insights to events and happenings.

To the Rice Family:
I was very sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Tom, a reminder of how precious life is. I had known Tom for a number of years as we shared many common interests. I appreciated his universal knowledge of many subjects and his wit and humor. I can attest, as a former President of the Swift County Historical Society and current County Commissioner, how much the communities of Appleton and Swift County appreciated his many talents and contributions. Tom will be most surely missed.
My sincerest sympathy to his family and friends.

To Tom's Family,
I was employed as Executive Director at the Swift County Historical Society which blessed me with the opportunity to get to know Tom Rice through the many, many hours Tom spent at the museum researching Swift County's Civil War Veterans, the history of Appleton, and other programs & projects he was working on.
Tom would call me at work and at home to talk about projects he was working on. Sometimes he would ask my thoughts or opinions on what he was doing. He continued to do this even after I retired three years ago.
My thoughts on Tom Rice are that "Tom was a great historian who wanted to share history with others."
I considered Tom a good friend. I will miss him.

I visited with Tom at the Zion Lutefisk Dinner just before I left for Texas. He was not looking forward to a doctor visit he had scheduled...I didn't realize just how serious this was. He was a dear man and shared so much with the people of Appleton. Thank you, Tom.

I heard Tom speak many times...his love of history was beyond the regular person, and enhanced with his love of sharing his knowledge will not be challenged by anyone. To have met this man, you are richer for it. Blessed be his memory.

Tom Rice was an asset to Appleton and the surrounding communities. Tom was an active and vocal participant in the betterment of the present Applelton, helped plan for the future Appleton, and joyfully shared the history of Appleton's previous residents. If you wished to be educated and entertained, just ask about Gettysburg or the Sioux Uprising. For the last several years, Tom would stop at the Milan Library to enlighten and enjoy its ambiance, graping a handful of free candy didn't hurt. I will miss Tom, I enjoyed his intellect, empathy, and his main purpose of life-to leave Appleton and the rest of the world a better place. God bless the memory of Tom Rice.

We will miss him so much. He would call us and we would get to visit with him. Tom and I would talk about things and then John and him would talk about the old cars. He was like another son to us.
