As a teacher at Valley View Elementary
in Meno Falls,we were able to honor Sergeant Cornell as he made his way to the Gloria church. I remember seeing his parents honor signs at the end of their driveway. My students and I have been touched by Todd´s service. Today marks the 20th anniversary of his passing which I am hopeful that his family celebrates him with memories of love and laughter.

What can I say about Todd that has not already been said. Like so many others that knew him, his sacrifice has affected me these past 10 years. Because I carry his memorial in my wallet, I think of him daily. Every time I pay for something I realize that he paid the ultimate price for my freedom. He was the epitomy of what a professional soldier is; it wasn't until his passing that I learned he was a dedicated father, and friend and inspiration to so many people at home and abroad.
I wanted to take this time today on his 10 year anniversary to thank Robert and Renee for raising a son who was so selfless in his devotion to our Country, and to let Caitlin and Jake know that their dad was the kind of person that they should be proud of and honored to have had as their father (even though it was for far to short of a time). I miss Todd and will continue to keep his family in my prayers.

To Caitlyn and Jake, your Dad served proudly and made a Sacrifice for our country. He believed in Freedom for all. He is a HERO. We know he will always be in your heart and looking down upon you and watching you grow into adults. I am sure he is proud of you both. Your Dad is that ANGEL on your shoulder. Believe he is with you. My thoughts are not only with your Dad and his memory today but with you both today and many days.

SSG Todd Cornell's family.
I was also in Todd's area of operations when he became a casualty. I was also an AST working in a different area at the time. My 1st SGT and I had to collect and inventory all of his personal effects, and I must tell you it was very painful. Could not help but see some of the letters he received from back home. I truly hope all the people of this great country appreciate the sacrifices soldiers make such as Todd made to keep this country free. May you rest in peace my brother! SFC Steve Limberg

SSG Todd Cornell was one of the best Soldiers I worked with as a Company Commander on a training mission at Fort Benning in 2001. I can still remember his sense of humor and ability to make training happen. He definitely excelled at it and he was down to earth and a good Soldier.

In memory of Todd. Today is especially a hard day of remembering. The tears are hard to hold back. Todd is painfully missed by so many. Especially family. You are our Hero that we take more time to remember on this Memorial Day. Good memories, memories filled with personality of Todd. Which will bring a smile, for sure. Thanks for answering to our country when you were asked to serve.

To the family of Staff Sgt. Todd R. Cornell:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

For the family,
Your son was a treasured friend. It has taken many years for me to able to express this, but it was deeply felt since the day I learned of his loss all those years ago. I have been by his memorial several times, and wept each time I knelt there. Many, many years ago, he taught me about self-respect, and that it was worth standing up for myself; he died teaching others the same thing. Please know that Todd was someone who left an impact on all those who knew him, no matter how; no matter when.

?4 1/2 years ago I stepped out of a work truck in a quite neighborhood in Waukesha, Wisconsin. As I loaded a bag off the truck I noticed a picture in my clients neighbors landscaping with a small plaque underneath. The picture was a staff sergant in his army uniform holding his daughter. The plaque said his name, that he was killed in the battle for falluja and "in memory of our husband, father, brother, son and hero." I got back in my truck and wept. I'm 30 now, run a business in North Carolina... I have a wife, a puppy a great life and I don't know why this small tribute affected me so greatly but I think about it to this day. Tomorrow is Memorial Day but you are a hero everyday.

Dad,
I just went through and read every entry in this booklet..along with mine from 2007. Things such as this truly help to keep your memory alive. Everyday your memory crosses my mind. This past November I was able to visit the NCO academy in Fort McCoy for my first time...it was honestly amazing and you deserve a legacy such as that, Dad. Jake looks SO much like you now that he's getting older, and not to mention has a full beard!! I've just turned 18 this past December and only one more semester of High School to go! I did graduate from the Challenge Academy up in Fort McCoy..I definitely felt your presence there everyday...I know you gave me the strength to persevere. Ahh, I have many more things to say but as of right now I think I'll leave it at this.
YOU ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN!
I love you and will always miss you.

Todd Cornell a brother from the far-near side of the earth, far because I'm an Iraqi interpreter who was honored and lucky to know such a generous hero who never hesitated to defend freedoms, I have huge amount of memories with Cornell, reading all the postings on this web site about him, I totally agree with the postings before mine, Cornell is a true hero, kind person, you talk to him for minutes you think you have known him for a long time, generous yes still have his leather gloves he gifted to me in the middle of the fight, those gloves and his emails in my email box I keep as memories from our hero. I started by saying " A brother from far-near side of the earth" I explained why far,now it's time to explain why it's near, I moved to the states 9 months ago, then traveled from the far south to the north in Milwaukee, WI without knowing that I'm getting closer to Cornell's home town, still have his gloves that toured more than half of the earth and I would like to give back to his family, always have Cornell in my mind, we been through a lot together before that sad day, we were real friends, I left him one night before that sad day because I was assigned to a mission with a company that was separated from the rest of the soldiers to go on foot with the marines to assault Falluja city, I heard the bad news two days later, I cried him for a long time, he was a special person.
My prayers go to his family, God bless you all.

I knew Todd after I got out of high school. He had a '57 Chevy and I had a '56. He was a good guy and its hard to believe its been 4 years that he has been gone.
I found out today from a mutual friend that his old '57 has been restored by someone and will be dedicated in his name for everyone to remember him.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Todd, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the Cornell's,
It has been quite some time since we last met at the dedication of the NCO Academy in Todd's name. I think of him and all of you often and you are never far from my thoughts and heart. He was one of the bravest men I have ever had the honor of serving with and was a true leader.

Bob, Rene, Tim, Tammy and family. I was just forwarded a picture of Tammy taken at a recent McCain/Palin rally holding a sign in tribute to Todd's sacrifice for all of us, and to not let Todd's death be in vain. At least from me, I want you to know that his sacrifice was truly not in vain and never will be...despite what may happen in any upcoming presidential election. I feel truly privileged to have men and woman like Todd fighting for mine and many other's freedoms all around the world. From the roadside memorials you've created in his memory to the reading of his name on Memorial Day, to the comments made by many others who have served along side of him like the young marine Ryan Lewis, and now Tammy's most recent tribute at the McCain/Palin rally, his sacrifice will never be forgotten...and certainly not by me. I want you to know that I have never forgotten the short few years I was once a part of your family circle and the good times I spent with Todd and all of you at your family home in Menominee Falls...talking about cars and motorcycles, and swimming and track, and sometimes just about life. I must be honest, there is only one person I've ever met in my life that I would consider to be a TRUE hero of mine, and that person is Todd...for his service and leadership, and ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms I hold so very close to my heart. Without hero's like Todd, our world as we know it and the daily ways that we live our lives would not be the same, not by a long shot. I was really touched by the guest book entry made by Caitlin on May 25th, 2007 to her dad. It became quite obvious to me after reading these few short sentences that Todd had already become the greatest hero of all...a hero to his children and family well before November 9th, 2004. And for almost 28 years now, since I've last seen all of you and spent time as part of your loving family, I knew that you were already very proud of Todd, for the man that he'd become, the father that he was for Caitlin and Jake, and for his his many years of service well before that fateful November day. I just wanted you to know this...as I think about Todd...as you are now approaching the fourth anniversary of the day that he gave his life for our beloved country and for all of our beloved freedoms. Thanks Bob and Mick and Tim and Tammy and Caitlin and Jake for his courage, dedication and many years of service. Rest In Peace Todd....and may God's loving care and healing grace continue to comfort the entire Cornell family.

"~Memorial Day 2008~
I remember finding out about Todd's sacrifice while reading an article online. Todd was a friend from high school who I had not seen in many years yet I was amazed at just how deeply his loss touched me. I now think of Todd often and pray for the family he left behind. I have plenty of ancient, but great memories of Todd and I hope Todd's family, especially his son and daughter will always know that he is with them always. I didn't know Todd as a father, but I did know Todd and I know he did his best to be a great dad.
Thank you Todd, Caitlin, Jake and Family for your gift & sacrifice to help bring peace to the world."

To the family of Staff Sgt. Todd R. Cornell:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 25 May, 2008. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain, LTC Kenneth L. Beale, Jr. will preach a message entitled “The Price of Freedom” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played.
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org
Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Sat. 24 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sun. 25 May, a “PrayerVigil for Peace” will be held. You are invited to stop by and light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one’s cross in the Memorial Garden, then enter the Chapel for prayer.
If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.
Respectfully,

To the family of an American hero. I am truly grateful for the sacrifice Todd was willing to give for our freedom. I lost my nephew in June 2004 and before that i can honestly say i took my freedom for granted. I now look at my freedom differently and are greatful for the brave men and women who defend our freedom. May God be with you

Yesterday was a great day! I am a professional soccer coach with the Milwaukee Wave. I also coach two youth teams in Waukesha, Wisconsin (10 year old boys and girls). After having coached both of my youth teams yesterday, I drove south along a back road in Menomonee Falls towards Silver Spring golf course where I was going to play a few holes of golf before heading to Miller Park to enjoy a some cold beverages and watch the Milwaukee Brewers baseball game. As I drove along without a care in the world, on an absolutely beautiful sun soaked afternoon, I noticed a small memorial along the side of the road which appeared to be dedicated to a fallen soldier. With curiosity, I turned my car around, pulled over and got out. I was glad I did, for as I viewed the memorial and saw the picture of the young man, it gave me the opportunity to pay respect to Staff Sgt. Todd R. Cornell.
After a few brief moments of reflection and prayer, I looked around and saw a man working hard in his yard. I gave him a wave of my hand. He waved back. As I returned to my car and drove off to enjoy the rest of my day, I hoped the man knew of the great appreciation and pride I felt in my heart for the service and sacrifice made by Todd, so that someone like myself could enjoy the freedoms of our country on a daily basis.
The sign beside the road read, "OUR SON, OUR HERO"
I want to say THANK YOU TODD! YOU ARE A HERO TO MANY! YOUR SACRIFICE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AND WORTHWHILE! and thank you to the family for reminding the rest of us. God Bless Todd in heaven!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I still miss my Biker Buddy Todd. I think of the many rides we took and the great times we had. One of my favorite times with him was when we crashed a wedding in Richfield in our full Harley leathers. We took over the dance floor and ended up having our picture taken dancing with the bride and groom. I would love to find out who that couple is and get a copy of that picture. We laughed so hard over that...so I couldn't help but to laugh again when the movie "Wedding Crashers" came out.

For the relatives of Staff Sgt. Todd Cornell
Hello, my name is Ryan Lewis and I am 24 yrs old from Houston, TX. I just want to tell you that I was with Todd while on our missions in Fallujah. There was a total of 8: 4 Army, 3 Marines, and 1 Navy Corpman. Then we had approximately 100 friendly iraqi's. I was one of the Marines. I just want to tell you that I am absolutly grateful that I had the oppurtunity to meet someone that was so awesome. His courage and leadership is the reason why I am typing this letter right now.
Well I thought I would drop by after I found his guestbook. :)

I was on the team that was assigned to replace Todd and his team in Fallujha. We didnt know at the time but he was due to leave in just a week a two. I had the honor to take the lead of his Iraqi soldiers in 2nd BN 1BDE IIF. Our Iraqi Company Commander, LtCol Abass told me that SSG Cornell was a very brave man, and a good man. I can tell you that he was respected as a leader and as a soldier. He will be missed.

Todd,
It has almost been a year and a half...but I think about the sacrifice you have made for all of us, all the time. While I was in the Marines, Grandma Du Du would always write to me as I'm sure she wrote to you and our brothers, she was so proud to have one grandson in each of the four branches of the military. And I was proud to have been part of a family that served it's country as we did. Little did I know that one of us would pay the ultimate sacrfice as you have. Each day goes by, and more news comes back from Iraq and Aphganistan that more Americans have givin their lives for the rest of us at home. While it has been 18 months since your passing.......your time here and what you have done, will never be forgotten.

I served with Todd in the 82nd Airborne Division some 20 years ago. I only recently found out about his death. Todd was a good freind back then and a good soldier. We went to New Orleans for Madi Gras during a four day pass in 1985 and we used to go water sking on White Lake In Elizabethtown, NC. I have many fond memories of Todd. I lost touch with him after I left Fort Bragg all those years ago. Even so, I can truly say that Todd was a great freind and soldier and the world needs more people like him. My condolences to his family and loved ones.

I can still see us togather in Taji, Najaf, Camp Duke and many other places watching a movie on a laptop or just talking about nothing and everything. Tod believed as did those of us with 4th Bn., IIF, CMATT, that if you were not out front, you were not leading. If you
were not leading, you were not earning respect. If you did not earn respect, you could not lead.

I would like to give my deepest sympathy to the Cornell family. Todd & I attended Kindergarden through 8th grade together and ended up going to seperate high schools (East-North). I'm sorry we lost contact over the years but that's what happens when you're cross town rivals. I grew up being overweight in grade school and always picked on, but Todd would ALWAYS stick up for me and I never forgot that. So it doesn't surprise me he went off to defend Americas freedom. It's been 20+ years since I probably last saw him, but it doesn't make it any easier. My flag has been flying half staff since last Tuesday and it will continue until Todd is laid to rest. Again, I am so soorry your loss...
