Walter Johannsen Obituary

Johannsen, Walter J., Ph.D. Born to Eternal Life on October 11, 2008, at the age of 78. Beloved husband and best life-long friend of Marilyn (nee Retzer). Loving father of Kristin (Kevin Millham) and Karen (Gary Talsky). Cherished son of Bridget (Johannsen-Moen). Dear brother of Eileen. Also survived by many other relatives and loving friends. After graduation from Marquette High School and University, he served in the U.S. Army which started his lifelong interest in photography; on his return, he earned his Ph.D in Clinical Psychology from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. In 1965 he achieved ABPP Diplomate certification. After an internship at the Veterans Hospital in Tomah, he returned to Milwaukee and worked at Wood Memorial Veterans Hospital. He later opened his private practice which he held until 1992. He also served as a consultant to several Archdiocesan institutions and organizations. Together with his colleagues he held several seminars and published studies. He was a member and former president (1972-73) of the Milwaukee Area Psychological Association, member and former president (1985-86) of the Wisconsin Psychological Association and a founder and the first president of the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology. He was perhaps most proud of his role and work as a founding member of the Sherman Park Community Association in the early 1970's. Walt also enjoyed numerous and varied hobbies: folk dancing, world travel, learning languages, back packing, local architecture and history. He recently authored Emerald Waters: A History of Forest Lake. As a stamp collector, he also volunteered at the public museum. He loved to race several classes of sailboats and won trophies in numerous regattas as a member of the Milwaukee Yacht Club. Visitation at ST ANNE'S SALVATORIAN CAMPUS CHAPEL, 3800 N. 92nd St., Milwaukee, at 12:00 noon followed by a Memorial Mass at 1:00 PM celebrated by his friend Rev. Thomas Suriano on Thursday, October 16, 2008. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Sherman Park Community Association, 3526 W. Fond du Lac Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53216 (414-444-9803 - www.shermanpark.org) or to Heifer Project International, 1 World Ave., Little Rock, AR 72202 (800-422-0474 - www.heifer.org) would be deeply appreciated. The family extends a special thanks to the staff at St. Anne's for their kind and compassionate care. Dear Bridget, Eileen and Family,

Many many years have come and gone since the days of Holy Cross and Bluemound Road and the memories of our favorite paperboy "Wally”.

Those dearest to us never really leave us; they live on in the way they cared, shared and made us happy.
Remember the good times, cherish them in your heart.
Now it is time for you to be strong and take care of Yourselves as Walter would want you to do.

I embrace you with love. Iam thinking of you & praying that time will heal the pain of your grief as we share this time of loss.

Love

More than anyone I've known, Wally was a Renaissance man. And, even more importantly, a great and good man _ dedicated to improving the community and the world.
I am personally indebted to him for mentoring me as a sailor and for making sure than I became the owner and guardian of his, and my, beloved Suntreader sailboat.
He has my profound respect and you have my deepest sympathy.

"Uncle Wally" was a great and interesting man Marilyn. I'm sure I can speak for my family when I say that. Many years have passed since the days visiting at Forest Lake or Christmas' at your house, but they are still some of my fondest memories of yours and our families. It's a comfort to know he's with my dad now...... probably talking about "side-hill cows" and smiling down on us!
Sorry for your loss

I was deeply saddened to learn of Walt's death. We were very close friends in high school, a mutual beginning of our pursuit of things cultural and intellectual which we carried into our adult lives. Since we both entered careers in psychology, we were able to maintain our friendship to some extent, although geographic distance interfered. My sympathy, especially to Marilyn and Walt's sister. Unfortunately I never met the children. I will keep the entire family in my prayers.

Marilyn - It was with sadness that we read about Walter's passing today. We both remember him as a good man, amd a good neighbor. Our sincere condolences.

Walt Johannsen's obituary is the story of the complete man who led a full life that included many contriutions to our society.

I met Walt when we took sailing lessons in 1966. I crewed for Skipper Walt for 6 years of MYC racing in centerboard boats. Then we partnered to buy and sail a 26' keelboat "Essence" for many years.

Walt was a wonderful man.
