William Vogl Obituary

William J. Vogl

Erin - William J. Vogl Sr. (Bill) born in Milwaukee to John and Edna Vogl on July 29, 1939 and passed away in Erin, Wisconsin on July 4, 2020. He married his wife of 63 years, Patricia (Ludyen), on August 8, 1957. Bill was on the Milwaukee Police Department for 34 years and retired as a Detective Lieutenant on the Homicide Squad. Bill worked for many police chiefs but his favorite chief was Harold Brier whom he called a "Policeman's Police Chief". Bill was an entrepreneur. At one time he had ownership interests in many rental real estate properties, the Up and Under Bar on Brady, Butterfly Cleaners, a tree cutting service, a construction company, a radio show called "Call in on Crime" and the Tally Ho in the Town of Thompson. He also helped run his wife's business the Five & Ten Tap. Bill unsuccessfully ran for city alderman and in Urban Milwaukee Magazine published on January 5, 2004, former Mayor John Norquist said "If Vogl had run [for Mayor] he could have beat me. He's the one guy of all of them who could have beat me." Bill enjoyed meeting people, fishing, hunting, gambling and just spending time with his family.

Bill is survived by his 3 children, Jim (Lori) Vogl of Mendota Heights, MN, Debbie Vogl of Lake Elmo, MN, Cindy (Mark) Weber of North Lake, WI and 3 grandchildren, Mark Weber, Greer Vogl, Garrett Vogl.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday July 14, 2020 at the Schmidt and Bartelt Funeral Home W250 N6505 Hwy. 164 Sussex, beginning at 3:00 pm until the time of memorial service at 5:00.

MY CONDOLENCES TO THE BILL VOGL FAMILY WITH RESPECT TO HIS PASSING. AS I READ THE JOURNAL SENTINEL FROM LAS VEGAS, WHERE I HAVE RETIRED TO, EACH DAY, THE MOMENT I SAW HIS NAME, I RECOGNIZED HIS NAME IMMEDIATELY, AS A PERSON WHO I HAD WORKED WITH, EVEN THOUGH, I RESIGNED, "IN GOOD STANDING" OVER FORTY YEARS AGO CHOSE TO RETURN TO MY BROADCASTING CAREER, BUT IN A BETTER WEATHER CLIMATE THAN MILWAUKEE.

BILL VOGL, WAS AN EXCELLENT CRIME SOLVER AND ROSE IN THE RANK TO LT. AS RECOGNIZED BY MOST OF MILWAUKEE'S POLICE OFFICERS, HAROLD A. BREIER, WHO KNEW HOW TO MANAGE A POLICE DEPARTMENT, WITHOUT OUTSIDE INTERFERENCE.

THOSE WHO MAY REMEMBER, THAT I SING PROFESSIONALLY, BUT NOT AS A PROFESSION, I AM HAPPY TO SAY, UNTIL THE PANDEMIC-19 HIT, I WAS SINGING WEEKLY IN A CASINO SINCE OCTOBER 2017

I knew Bill from Rufus King High School and also when we were both detectives with the Milwaukee Police Dept. He was later my boss when he was a lieutenant. A fine person and a nice man. Rest in peace Bill.
