Yvonne Lockwood Obituary

Lockwood, Yvonne A. 89, of Jackson, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2015 at the Matterhaus, a memory care facility on the campus of the Gables of Germantown. She was born on August 23, 1925 in Grafton to the late Alfred and Lillian Puerling. She graduated from Washington High School in Milwaukee. After a long train ride to California with her mother, she married her high school sweetheart, Ensign Alfred G. Froehlich, US Navy, in the Old Mission Church in Santa Barbara on August 14, 1944. Five weeks later Al's ship, LSM-15, departed for the western Pacific theater of war. He was not to return for more than a year. Yvonne and Al moved from Milwaukee to Michigan and then to West Bend where they built a house on the Milwaukee River near Newburg. There they raised a splendid family of four children: James Froehlich, MD (Jackie) of West Bend, Lynn Russell (Michael) of Loveland, CO, Thomas Froehlich (Mary) of West Bend and Patricia Verfuerth of Plymouth, WI and Palm Springs, CA. All have survived and have enriched her with 13 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Yvonne was a delightful woman and a loving Mom. She was active at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Newburg and president of the West Bend Garden Club. She served enthusiastically for over 30 years in many capacities in the West Bend Lioness-Lions Club. On August 19, 2009 Yvonne was presented with a Melvin Jones Fellowship award. The award honors the founder, Melvin Jones of the Lions Club International. It is the highest form of recognition conferred by the foundation which meets humanitarian needs in communities worldwide. She loved to travel. She visited nine southern European countries from Spain to Turkey, and most of the U.S. from Alaska to Georgia and from Maine to California. After 54 years of marriage her beloved husband, Al Froehlich, died on April 7, 1999. On March 18, 2006 she married George Lockwood, a widower who had been married 54 years to Anne Farnsworth of Providence, Rhode Island. Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James Puerling (Mary). She is survived by her brother Jack Puerling, her sister Ruth Koenigs, her sister-in-law Mary Puerling, her niece Lee Nyberg (Ken) and her step-son John Lockwood (Terri). A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon on Saturday, January 10 at Holy Angels Parish, 230 North 8th Ave., West Bend. Visitation will be at the church from 10 am until the time of the service. Committal services at the Washington County Memorial Park will follow Mass. In lieu of flowers memorials can be given to Holy Angels Parish, Alzheimer's Disease Research or the Washington County Humane Society. The family would like to thank her friend Joan Harter from Comfort Keepers, the staff of "angels" at Samaritan Health Center, the conscientious and loving caregivers at the Matterhaus, and the kind and competent assistance from Jodi, RN, from Season's Hospice. Yvonne was so dear to me for many years. I married her uncle Alan in 1979 and we shared many, many happy times together. Last time we spoke she appeared to remember me and that she and George enjoyed their visit with Vern and me in our home in Arizona. God bless her always.

So many good memories of Yvonne as a special co-worker at the Marth & Limbach Law firm, fun times together at the Lions Club events and the list goes on - a very special lady indeed who will always be kindly remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this difficult time.

I was blessed to call Yvonne family for nearly 9 years, and am so grateful for the life she and my grandpa enjoyed together. It's with heavy, but hope-filled, hearts that we will say our final goodbyes to her tomorrow. I will never forget her kindness, her love, her absolute joy... and how one of the last times I got to see her, she held my face in her hands and, despite the advancing Alzheimers, told me, "I know you, Honey! I remember you." I will always remember you too, "G.G. Yvonne"

We will always remember Yvonne as she was one of our first neighbors we met on Caleb Court. George and family you have our deepest sympathy.
