Albert Shaw Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Albert L. Shaw, a native and lifelong resident of Juneau, on February 13, 2024 at the age of 93 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children Karl Shaw (Roz Lassoff) and Robert Shaw (Cindy); grandchildren Kate Duthie (Forrest), Meredith Porter (Brian) and Kristina Shaw (Colin Steed); great-grandchildren Maverick and Archer Shaw; brothers George and Gerald "Jay" Shaw (Jan); sister Margaret Scheibe (Mark); brother-in-law Vic Richmond; former spouse Brita Rice and her children Johanna "JJ" Vollenweider (Jason Page) and Brent Vollenweider (Shieva Latifpour); step-granddaughter Morgan Lassoff; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

He was predeceased by his loving wife of 41 years and the mother of his children, Viola Shaw; sisters Lorene Richmond and Mary Katherine Shaw; and parents, George and Katherine (née Messerschmidt) Shaw.

Al attended St. Ann's School and graduated from Juneau High School in 1948. After attending the University of Washington – interrupted by two years in the Army at Fort Richardson -- and obtaining a teaching degree from Western Washington University, he spent several decades teaching for the Juneau School District. Al was instrumental in setting up the planetarium at the Marie Drake building and operated it for many years. He worked in carpentry during summers and was Treasurer of the carpenters' union for 20 years. Al served on the Juneau City Council from 1960 to 1965 and on the Board of Directors of the DIPAC Macaulay Salmon Hatchery since 1986.

Al was a life-long parishioner at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Juneau as well as a regular at the Saturday pancake breakfasts at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church. As a child, he was the first acolyte at the first service at the National Shrine of St. Thérèse.

Al also enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. He visited all seven continents and, in 1953, survived a deadly plane crash in the Swiss Alps. A passionate and accomplished skier, Al began skiing at age six in Evergreen Cemetery. He skied into his nineties and often crossed the globe to ski in August. Al co-founded and co-owned the Second Cabin ski area in Juneau and played a key role in developing the Eaglecrest ski area. He was also on the National Ski Patrol from 1954 until his passing in 2024.

A funeral mass will be held at noon on March 16 at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church, 9055 Atlin Dr., Juneau, AK. The mass will also be broadcast live on St. Paul's Facebook page. A reception will follow at St. Paul's.

Al Shaw was a fine man. I knew him through my time at Eaglecrest which spanned 25 years, a small reconning compared with his experience in the local ski population.
Always a character, Eagle 20 Shaw, as his radio call sign had him, or simply "Old Shaw", the man added a great deal to whatever discussion was being had at the time. He had endless stories about 2nd Cabin and dealing with the Forest Service there and with setting up Eaglecrest later on.
Al was perhaps unusual in that he'd have lunch with you one day and the next pass you by on the street as if you were a total stranger. I never took that too hard- he was a good man and my life was better for having known him.

I well remember both Mr. and Mrs. Shaw from attending Marie Drake Jr. High. Mrs. Shaw was a kind and wonderful English teacher. Mr. Shaw was the enthusiastic Planetarium operator who shared his keen interest in the stars and planets above us. I can still remember his deep booming voice in his lectures about constellations and the Milky Way. Every time I see Orion in the night sky over my house I cannot help but hear his voice. He really was one of a kind.

Mr. Shaw was my 7th grade teacher in 1955-56. I think it was his first year of teaching and our high spirited class probably kept him on his toes! He was patient, well prepared and destined to be an excellent educator. Thank you, Mr. Shaw, for all you did for so many!

My most heartfelt condolences to his family - he was so very proud of his `kids´ and bragged about them all the time. I greatly enjoyed getting to know Al in his later years - such an alive and energetic person. He will be missed indeed!

Albert was one of the first people to trust me in helping with his real estate needs. I learned so much from my interactions with him over the years, and I was lucky enough to have known his mother. The last time he was in my office he promised to reach out and meet up for coffee or breakfast. I sure wish we had had that opportunity. I'm sure glad he gave me a hug that last visit.

So sorry to hear. Back in the day of wooden skis, cable bindings, and leather boots I remember Mr Shaw running the rope tow at second cabin. When I attended Marie Drake I loved when we went to the planetarium. Rock on Mr Shaw!

I wanted to add one more memory regarding Mr. Shaw. I think Mr. Shaw did know I had no father at home. In shop, I had decided to construct a bookcase of which I had no idea of what to do. Mr. Shaw guided me through the whole process and I had a great outcome. While it was just a bookcase, it meant a great deal to me. He was a wonderful man.

This man did so much for his family. He deeply valued education and helped many young people with their tuition. He seemed intimidating at times with his booming voice and set ways about details like: the size of napkins purchased for family dinner. But his actions spoke even louder than he did. He lived frugally so he could lavish his family with the good things, like time together skiing down a mountain.

Al skied the 2 winters he was in the Army. After Basic Training at Ft. Richardson he went to the Post Engineers, carpenter shop. Then the winters of 1951-2 & 52-3 he was at the Army run Arctic Valley ski area.

If there are slopes in Heaven, I know Al will be skiing them all. Jetting off to visit friends in a far off Heavenly shores, Al continues his journey. It´s hard for us who are left behind, but Al is just hitting his stride. For all of Al´s family, may great memories warm your grief.

Ski on Al, we´ll meet you back at the chalet.
