David Austin Obituary

David Elbert Austin died at the age of 80 on January 12, 2024, in Anchorage, Alaska after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on March 10, 1943 to Holcombe and Ethelind Austin, and trained as a classical cellist with undergraduate studies at Amherst College, receiving Masters of Musical Arts degrees from both Hartt College of Music and Yale School of Music. He moved to Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska in 1979 with his wife Donna and family, joining a Christian community at Game Creek and raising their six children in this rural setting.

As a small-town Alaskan resident, David was a true Renaissance Man. He worked as a professional musician, music teacher, schoolteacher, band director, skilled luthier, church elder and deacon, sporting goods store owner, commercial fisherman, sawmill builder and operator, truck driver, and mechanic, to name a few of his many skills. He was affectionately known as Captain Two Hats because he often wore a knit hat over a baseball cap and was always juggling multiple responsibilities. For the last twenty years he owned and operated Tideland Tackle and Marine in Hoonah. He was a true entrepreneur who saw needs as opportunities. When the town lost its only bank, he brought in ATMs and figured out how to stock them with crowd-sourced twenties. When the local coffee shop closed down, he opened an espresso counter. When fishermen needed hydraulic hoses repaired, he learned that skill..

Music was woven throughout David's life.  He was well known both for teaching and for the classical cello and piano concerts that he played with Donna. He also performed with the Juneau Bach Society, orchestras in Juneau, Anchorage, and Fairbanks, and in many string quartets and ensembles in Alaska, Boston, and New York.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Donna (née Carey), children Christopher (Michelle and grandchildren Michael, Victoria, Jonathan, Clarissa, Gabriel, Joshua), Sarah (Joel DiGloria and grandchildren Valerie, Anthony), Gregory (Leah and grandchildren James, Emma), Charity (Michael Grunst and grandchildren Caden, Chloe), Jeremy (Jennifer and grandchildren Dominic, Evelyn), Nathan (Danielle Butler), brother John (Nancy), sister Susan (Lawrence Ricketts), and many other extended family members. With never an unkind word, David lived Ben Franklin's quote "Well done is better than well said," and his actions spoke to all who knew him. A gathering to commemorate his life will be held in Hoonah, Alaska in the spring.

Game Creek changed my life and David and Donna were at the heart of that change and Donna's parents too. When David would visit us later in Juneau he brought his cello and we played and sang spontaneously together in at least one Juneau body meeting. What an honor! Once I went to hug him recognizing him in a Juneau hardware store and he restrained me, "not here, Terry!" David was a beautiful human being!

I had the unique opportunity to visit Game Creek in June of 2023. I met the Austin Family and extended family in the community and it is a visit that I will never ever forget. What a wonderful and warm group of humans. David I could see was the center of the backbone of that community. I only met him once and spent a bit of time with him, but felt as if I had known him for a long time. We spoke the language of music together and I felt the history in the relationship with Donna. Wow! I wish I could have known him better. Reading this really helped a lot and just as I suspected, Renaissance man is right! I feel grateful for my time at Game Creek and I do believe I am connected to the family now.

A wonderful friend, missed already. Masterful in music, adept in business. He shared his passion for music with his students and those around him. Love to his family and friends.

David was always welcoming when I travelled out to the farm. I always learned more than I shared. It was always a special time to visit Game Creek. David will be missed.

A man of substance overcoming encounters where many haven´t gone and Gods blessings as he walked the walk. Truth was his standards and peace spread to those acquaintance. Love for the family and his surroundings expounded where ever he went
David was considered a community member of Hoonah the largest Tlingit town in the world. He will certainly be missed dearly for his enduring joy spread just knowing him.
I´ve known him since he moved to Game Creek traveling back and forth on a make shift float to supply his abode Mt. Bether with many drums of much needed fuel, groceries that couldn´t grow in the garden that was shared to residents of Huna. Traveled with the high tide of Port Frederick to Game creek then next high tide back as the landing was on a flats.

Not enough words to express his work well done and enter the Eastern Heavenly gate welcomed with Angels singing Glory Hallelujah. Yes David you will be missed. God blessings of peace to Donna and family, friends.

Some photos of Captain Two Hats doing what he loved; music and gathering with family. And a photo of mom and dad from their wedding day 57 years ago.

I miss you so much, Daddy. We all do. You were called home far too soon.
