Guy Tabor Obituary

Local singer and songwriter Guy "Buddy" Tabor died Sunday evening February 5, 2012 in Juneau. He was 63. Buddy had been receiving treatment for cancer since September. He died peacefully at home, surrounded by friends and family.

Buddy was born March 12, 1949 in Roanoke, Virginia, the son of Guy Edison Tabor Sr. and Mazie Geraldine Gardner Tabor. He grew up in Roanoke where he attended local schools. His mother was a homemaker who sang in the choir of the West End United Methodist Church. His father supported his family as a sign painter.

He first came to Alaska in 1967 where he worked for the Post Office, for the Alaska Railroad and on the TransAlaska oil pipeline. In 1976 he married Jeannette Chee. He and Jeannette moved to Juneau in 1977 where he worked for the City and Borough of Juneau, the State of Alaska, Catholic Community Services, brief ownership of the Orpheum Theatre and then self-employment as a housepainter in partnership with long-time friend Franz Schneider.

Buddy began playing guitar at age 14. He worked hard to become a disciplined and accomplished guitarist and musician. Over his lifetime Buddy had a highly productive career as a singer-songwriter who produced and released nine albums and wrote hundreds of original songs. Among his many musical and poetic influences were Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, John Prine, Adrian C. Lewis, Rebecca Lee Yates, Joy Harjo, Sherman Alexie and the King James Bible. His first paid gig was at the Red Dog Saloon in the 70s. Other appearances included over three decades of Alaska Folk Festival performances and shows at the Orpheum, McPhetre's Hall, Resurrection Lutheran Church and many other venues where he was often joined by musician friends such as Betsy Sims, Collette Costa, Albert McDonnell, John Hartle, Riley Woodford, Pat Henry, Jason Caputo, Justin Smith, Kevin Barr, Art Johns, Paul and Melissa Zahasky, the late Bob Pavitt and many others in Alaska and Yukon Territory. He was a member and supporter of the Alaska Folk Festival from its inception.

In recent years Buddy was a participant in a regular song circle with Terry and Frederick Hoskinson, Elva Bontrager, Gerry Fiscus, Sandy Warner, Mike Truax, Cheryl Cook, Kathy Hawker and George Trani.

Buddy also performed regularly for inmates at Folsom Prison in collaboration with poet Marty Williams. His final performance was at the California prison in December 2011. In addition he opened for national stars Nancy Griffith, Townes Van Zandt and Iris DeMent.

Buddy's song "Get Up Dogs," was featured on ABC's Wide World of Sports and other documentaries, and his songs "New Fallen Snow," and "My Father's Grave" was covered by the Undertakin' Daddies, a Canadian band.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Jeannette, his sons Joshua and Jesse, his sisters Ann Carol Light, her husband Auburn Light, and their children, Aubie and Alex; Barbara Yvonne Tabor Flora and her husband Ben Flora; Judy Rae Tabor and her children Keaton Tabor and Judith Tabor DeShawn and by Margaret Tabor Armstrong and her husband Tommy, and their children Michelle, Rebecca and Meghan.

His ecumenical funeral was Saturday, February 11th at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in downtown Juneau.

Oh Buddy....how Willy has missed you. So many memories and your music will last for a long time. Now you and Willy are up in heaven together enjoying your music and, debating religion and politics. Now The Master will be smiling and setting you straight. How I miss you two.

And so many others greatly loved and appreciated you, Buddy, and the music, the humor, the spirituality, and the sweetness you gave to us, likely much more than you ever knew. I can only hope that you know everything, now. Deepest sympathies to Jeannette, and to all of the family.

Buddy was one of Alaska's finest poets, one of the dangerous ones who told the truth, as our friend Ken Melville would say.

It was wonderful that he was willing to let us know that he was sick and needed help, so that we could turn out in force and let him know that we cared at November's Blues for Buddy fundraiser, and that his out of town friends could hold similar events in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Whitehorse. He was able to say goodbye to friends, and showed us all how to exit with dignity.

His music will live on and inspire others, and I hope that it will be discovered and recorded by younger musicians, so he will continue to touch the lives of others as he did when he was with us.

I'm sure that Buddy and Uncle Bob are having a great jam session in Heaven.

Buddy was one of the first people I met when I moved to Juneau in 1985 and I started going to Calvary Fellowship. He was so outgoing and introduced me to many friends in the music community. I spent many happy hours playing music with Buddy at home, in concert and on a couple of his recordings. He was always an interesting person to spend time with, and we used to get into some good political arguments, which were always fun. I left Juneau years ago, and I can't imagine the place without him. I could go on and on, but I know I will see Buddy again. I can imagine that he will be writing a lot of new songs in heaven. Joyous, happy songs now.

As a kid growing up in Juneau, I will always remember that smile and bounce in Buddy's step. I later got to know Buddy through the minister of Mick Ewing at Calvary. Buddy and others blessed with more musical gifts than me always struck an angelic tone in their musical ministry. Buddy, we'll see you soon on the other side. You will always be a fond memory as my journey continues down here in the lower 48. Peace and love, my friend. You made the world a bette place because you lived.

Buddy Tabor touched my life in many ways and many times. I met him when I lived in Juneau as the pastor of Juneau Methodist Church, Douglas Community United Methodist Church and one of the founding pastors for Northern Light United Church. He came to Nome to do some personal healing and lived in the Community United Methodist Church when I was the pastor there from 1974-1981. I don't remember the year he came . While with us, he also painted a significant amount of the rooms in the building as a gift to the church for us providing the housing for him. He was a gracious and sensitive person and generous in sharing his musical talent. I was honored and pleased to know him.

I met Buddy a few ago through a mutual friend in Anchorage, around 2003. Until 2007 when I moved out of AK if Buddy was in town we'd share songs and evenings together. My wife (Terry Holder) and I opened a show for him in Anchorage and then joined him on stage honored to add some harmonies to his songs. I well remember sharing the stage with him at Folsom Prision in 2005. I was more intimidated sharing the satge with Buddy than by those in the audience listening to us. He was so at ease and related so well to those in the audience. Just as he seemed to so easily share his life through his words and music with a quiet and humble wisdom. I'll forever cherish these memories.

See you on the other side my friend....

Sorry to heat it, so sorry. The 40 years I've lived in Juneau and the twenty or so years I had the pleasure of watch Buddy influence, help and encourage other musicians finds their way and their voice.
Always a quiet in the back kinda guy making sure the folk festival kept it's original spirit. Thanks for sharing your gifts so freely Buddy. This town will remember you always Bob and Ruth Simpson

I remember Buddy back in the old Calvary Fellowship days in the 80's. I remember when he sang the song "Jesus Savior Pilot Me". I would visit his family at his Switzer village home. I enjoyed his sense of humor and he always made me laugh about what seemed at the time dire circumstances. Years later Buddy visited me and my family in Ellensburg, Washington while I was attending CWU and he shared songs he wrote on his annual pilgrimage to the east coast to visit his mom. Then one of the following winters Buddy and Betsy recording one of his albums at my Mendenhall Valley home. He was very devoted to his songwriting and his family. I will miss him greatly as a personal friend and Christian brother even though we've lost touch over the past years. He was a genuine person!

Almost the only comfort is that before he died Buddy knew how much he is loved by the people he left behind. RIP, my friend.

I will put one of Buddy's albums on tonight and listen with great joy and sorrow as I remember the many times I watched him perform over the years. He enriched our lives with his music, Juneau has lost a little piece of its soul with his passing.

Dearest all family members. I am so sorry for the loss of Buddy. I knew Buddy back in the early 50's when Buddy's family I believe lived on 4th ST. S.W. in Roanoke. My dear brother, Raymond Lee Beheler, was a dear friend of Buddy's. Ray and Buddy kept in touch all the many years even after each moved away from one another. Our family lived on Day Ave. S.W. Ray met up with Buddy about every morning so they could walk to school. They walked to Highland Park School together. Buddy visited Ray and his family often when he came to Roanoke. I got to see Buddy and talk to him a few times. Ray and Buddy bonded together for a lifetime and always kept in touch with one another. He like my brother will sadly be missed by all of us. God Bless each and everyone of you for the loss of Buddy.

We met Buddy in 1972 and have been friends ever since, our kids grew up with one another, played with him at the Alaska Folk Fest in the 80s, hosted a house concert for Buddy almost every year here since 1993 to 2007 in Pagosa Springs, Colorado; among many others, we will miss his brand new songs and especially that great big heart of his! We're already missing you, Buddy - lots of love and gratitude!
