Robert Haffner Obituary

Robert "Swede" A. Haffner & Judy E. Haffner

Robert & Judy Haffner were married August 1958 in Juneau where they raised their four children. They died within one year and one day of each other.

Judy passed on September 24, 2018 in Anchorage following surgery and a short illness. Robert passed peacefully at his home in Auke Bay on September 25, 2019 after a lengthy illness.

Judy was born in October 1940 in Juneau. Her homemaking skills, love of her family and friends and especially her baking was legendary and her recipes were featured in several publications. She worked at the Sears Catalog store and also as treasurer of the Sourdough Gem Society non-profit organization for many years. She enjoyed participating in bake sales and volunteering for Juneau based charities.

Robert was born in January 1932 in Shelton, WA. He served in the US Navy from 1952-1956. He worked for the City & Borough of Juneau as the Supervisor of Juneau's Airport maintenance shop until his retirement. One of his greatest pleasures was relaxing, hunting and fishing at his cabin up Berners river and working on his airboats.

Robert & Judy were preceded in death by their son, Ronald J. Haffner. They are survived by their son Jack (Roberta) Haffner of Texas, daughters Laurie (James) Helfinstine and Heidi Raven Haffner of Juneau. Granddaughters LaTina (Kevin) Macan, Brynn Sellers and Shadoe (Forrest) Burke of Juneau, Kaya (Chris) Day of South Carolina and Great Granddaughter Calista Sellers of Anchorage.

A celebration of life potluck will be held for Swede and Judy on Oct 22nd from 5:30-8:30 PM Smith Hall, Chapel by the Lake in Auke Bay. Bring your stories and a favorite dish to share.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in their name to Hospice & Home Care of Juneau at 1803 Glacier Highway Juneau, Alaska.

This is late but just heard today of Swede's passing. Judy & I became Pals in 1960 & remained so until her death. We visited them in Geneva, NE & Auke Bay AK many times. Judy & I were sisters neither of us having any siblings. I miss you so much. May we meet again in the yonder. Joyce & Jim Willard

Judy and I were letter friends since the mid 1960s. I got to meet both Swede and Judy in 2001 at the Nebraska penpal picnic. And in 2002 when we took an Alaskan cruise they picked us up at the port and "showed us the town" as well as hosting us in their home. I have wonderful memories of them both. Prayers to the family.

Judy and Swede were wonderful people, even first time meeting them, there were warm hugs and treated us like they had known us forever. Always enjoyed our time with them every time we came to Juneau. God bless them and Ron, I'm sure their reunion in heaven was truly glorious!

Shadoe, we are so sorry about the loss of your grandfather. We knew both your grandparents from the days of our photofinishing lab - they were regular and favorite customers. Along with your parents' patronage, Keith and I got to see lots of your family pictures. We wish you and your family peace and comfort at this difficult time of your lives.
