Dennis Moore Obituary

Moore, Dennis F., Sr., MD 79, died November 6, 2015. A rosary service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, November 10, with a funeral mass following at 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, both at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Dr. Moore graduated from the Tulane University School of Medicine in 1962, completed his residency in Internal Medicine at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, and served with the Public Health Service in Galveston, TX. He earned his fellowship in Hematology and Developmental Therapeutics at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he served as a member of the academic staff. Dr. Moore returned to Wichita, where he was the first oncologist to practice in the state of Kansas, along with his wife, the first oncology nurse in the state of Kansas. He practiced in Wichita for more than 40 years and considered it a great privilege to serve his patients and their families. He established funds to help those who could not afford their medicines, in particular the families whose children had leukemia or other cancers. He established the Kansas chapter of the Leukemia Society of America, and served on the national Board of Trustees for many years with the Patient Services Committee. Dr. Moore was instrumental in establishing the oncology unit at St. Joseph's Hospital and helped with the creation of a large dialysis unit. He gave his time to the community in many other ways as well, having served in various leadership positions with the Boy Scouts of America, Quivira Council, for much of his life. He was also active in his faith and service to God and was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in Wichita. Most importantly, he loved Janie, his wife and best friend, and also dearly loved his children and grandchildren, providing them with many lessons about a life of love and service to others. He will be greatly missed by those who were touched by his life. He is greatly loved and deeply missed by his family, who is very grateful for his presence in their lives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Rhetta Moore, and brother, Keith Moore. Survivors include his wife, Janie; sons, Dr. Dennis F. Moore, Jr., Dr. Tom (Joan) Moore, Tim Moore and Michael (Kevin Pope) Moore. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, Dennis III, Joseph (Molly), Matthew, Kathleen, Stephen, Henry, Christine, Kimberly, Charlotte, Grace, Margaret and Ian. Memorials have been established with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 300 N. Main, Wichita, KS 67202 and Quivira Council Boy Scouts of America, 3247 N. Oliver, Wichita, KS 67220. If one could have pleasant memories about having leukemia, Doctor Moore would be at the top of the list. I will never forget his caring AND confident manner. And his leadership in Scouting was inspiring.

I had the honor of working with Dr Moore back in the '90s. Such a brilliant doctor. He had forgotten more medicine than most physicians knew. And such a sweet person - I'll never forget his quirky smile and gentle nature.

Thanks to Dr. Moore, I am alive today to be raising 5 beautiful children. My oldest just turned 18 on Nov. 16. She grew up with me in Dr Moore's office since I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma when she was just 1 month old. I have been in remission for almost 18 years and I thank Dr. Moore for that! His presence and advice will be greatly missed and I know I will never find another physician that provides the care and love he does. Rest In Peace Dr. Moore!

We were so sad to read of Dr. Moore's death. He took over my husband's care at the Wichita Clinic in 1993 after cancer surgery and chemo when his Doctor left and continued that care until he retired. We liked him so much. He was such a good Doctor and so caring and interesting. Leon missed him when he retired. Our prayers and thoughts are with you at this time. Sincerely, Leon & Dot Rickman

Janie & family, we were so saddened when we read of Dr. Moore's passing. We met Dr. Moore through a very sad time when he diagnosed our daughter Tonya McMillen in 1971 when she was 18 months old. We are also so thankful to him that he cared enough to send her to MD Anderson hospital when she did not respond to treatment here. We always have to smile when we think of him wrestling with her silk night gowns & PJ's in the hospital, knowing that he only had boys, it was so humorous. We thank God first & then Dr. Moore for taking such good care of her. Tonya is doing well & has a 12 year old daughter of her own, Praise God. You & your family is in our thoughts & prayers..Bobbi & Jerry McMillen

I didn't know Dr. Moore personally. My experience with him was a result of my 93 year old father moving to Wichita from Kansas City with a rare form of leukemia. In our first visit to Dr. Moore, he was annoyed at the fact that the medical records sent from K.C. were incomplete. What totally blew me away was he spent 1 1/2 hours personally calling the appropriate medical personnel in K.C. to get the information he needed to prescribe further treatment. I have never forgotten the personal attention and care he gave to an elderly man that obviously had very little time left on this earth. A very heartfelt thank you to a very special and caring doctor who went far beyond anyone's expectations to help my father. My condolences to the entire family.
