Don Lock Obituary

KINGMAN-Lock, Don Wilson "Locker" was born in Wichita, KS the only child of John and Agnes Wilson Lock on July 27, 1936. He died October 8, 2017, at his home in Wichita with his family. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Agnes, and his wife Delores. He is survived by his son Deron Lock, wife Sherye, grandsons Taylor and Zach of Derby, KS; daughter Dina Davis and husband Ron Davis, granddaughters, Connor, Kolby, grandson, Kaden of Ellsworth, KS and also by his beloved Mary B (Mary Boyer) and her children, Tracy Heuermann, Tempe, Arizona, Dr. Anne Saturday, Corvallis, MT and Rob Boyer, Leadwood, KS and their families. His career in baseball began in Rago, KS (population of maybe 28). His dad and several neighbors built a baseball field in Rago and he started playing fastpitch softball with the adults. When he was 13 he played in his first state men's tournament. He also started playing baseball with the Kingman American Legion. He played in the first football game he ever saw. Don graduated from Kingman High School in 1954 having lettered in football, basketball and track. He went to Wichita University on a basketball scholarship and was a starting guard in the first game ever played in the Round House. Ralph Miller, his coach, brought in Phog Allen and the KU basketball team to dedicate the Round House. (He thought KU won 55-52). He was one of the last 3 sport letterman at Wichita State in basketball, track and baseball in his junior year. After his junior year in college he played for the Boeing Bo-Jets culminating in an invitation to the national tournament and subsequent exposure to the Major League Baseball scouts. He ended up signing with the Yankees in 1958 for a signing bonus of $22,500!. He was inducted into the WSU basketball and baseball Halls of Fame and Wichita and Kansas Halls of Fame for his 8 year major league career. Upon retirement from baseball Don farmed in Kingman county and spent his retirement years in west Wichita. Don Lock was a wonderfully engaging man! He lived life to the fullest with a sweet heart-an unselfish, loyal friend to all who knew him! Everything was always more fun when Locker was around! His mantra was "Isn't it great to be alive?!! Don was always so appreciative of the life he was blessed with-his family and many friends! An old friend once asked him if he was going to heaven or hell? After consideration, he responded: "well, I'm not sure, but wherever I go I know I'll be with friends and it'll probably be my turn to buy! Some people leave a big footprint on our hearts and in our lives and Don Lock was certainly one of them! Mary, my sister Joan called me this am to tell me of Dons passing. I am so sorry for your loss but as we know God is in control. I always remember what fun we had playing Mexican Train, he was so special in so many ways. I wish I was closer as would attend the service, however I am coming up on Oct 12 for our reunion. So hopefully will see you there and if not will be in ICT for about 2 weeks. I did call Jack Rickard, my ex, and told him. He thought Don was a great guy and friend. Love you my special friend and you are in my prayers. Hugs, Mary
