Jack Farber Obituary

MULVANE - Farber, Jack R., age 84, farmer, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009. Funeral service 2pm Friday, at Smith Mortuary, 1415 North Rock Road, Derby. Memorial donations may be made to the Kansas Humane Society, 4218 Southeast Blvd., Wichita, KS 67210. Mr. Farber was born April 2, 1925, to Grover Cleveland and Ethel (Payne) Farber, of rural Mulvane. He began elementary school in the Derby Historical School House. His education was completed in Mulvane, where he lettered in basketball, football, music and participated in FHA, band and various plays. After graduation in 1943, he joined the United States Army, a decision he never regretted. During his tour of service he traveled the West Coast, Hawaii, South Pacific Islands and China. While stationed in Okinawa, Cpl. Farber was the sports editor of the Daily Okinawan newspaper. Jack returned home from the war and married Gayle M. Schneider. They settled just north of Mulvane, where they farmed for the remainder of their lives. Mr. Farber was preceded in death by his wife, Gayle; parents, G. C. and Ethel Farber; brothers, Eugene and Paul Farber; step-son, H. Louis Schneider. Survivors include: son and business partner, Steven R. "Bob" Farber, Sr. and wife, Yvonne, of Derby; daughter, Mary K. Peterson, of Blue Springs, MO; step son, Frank C. Schneider and wife, Shannon, of Odessa, TX; grandchildren, Steven R. Farber, Jr., Jon Farber, of Mulvane, Michael Peterson and Julie Peterson, of Blue Springs, MO; five step grandchildren and many cats - especially Spiffy. Dad will be remembered for his war stories, heroic attempts to cure ailing farm animals, diagramming sentences and proving the ruination of the country will be credit. If there is a place in heaven for an old worn out farmer - let the ground be fertile and the machinery be running. Remember - "old hog farmers never die - they just smell that way".

I will really miss Jack! He would come to the co-op and keep me laughing. I loved to listen to his war stories, too. He was a really interesting man with a big heart expecially for animals. Poor Spiffy will really miss him, too. Marsha Humbolt Campbell

Grandpa Jack,
Your grumpniess will be missed, because behind it was a true caring for what is right and wrong. Thank you for things you said to me, and things you didnt. I pray that the lord has taken the pain away and you are free to drive that John Deere anywhere and anytime you want too. We are all better people for knowing you, and loving you. We will never forget you.
Your grandson and family,
Paul and Debbie Legge
