Wichita, Kansas - Sr. Julita Paulie, 97, a member of the Congregation of St. Joseph for 80 years, died Saturday, April 24, 2021.
Sr. Julita (Rita Adelaide) was born April 24, 1924 to parents Joseph and Nellie Paulie on a farm near St. Paul, Kansas.
Her education began in Brogan Rural School. Following the completion of elementary school, she attended St. Francis High School in St. Paul for three years. After her third year she entered Mt. St. Mary's Convent where she finished high school. Sister Julita entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph March 19, 1941 and made her final profession of vows on August 15, 1946.
Sr. Julita obtained a bachelor's degree from Marymount College, Salina, Kansas, a master's degree from Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas and graduate studies in Philosophy from The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.
She served in ministry as an elementary and middle school teacher and a principal for 28 years in Kansas and Oregon before transitioning to a college teaching career at St. Mary of the Plains College until 1980 when she was elected to the General Council of the Congregation. From 1984-1993 she served as the General Secretary for the Congregation and 1993-1994 she was the Assistant Archivist. In 1994, Sister Julita began ministering to the residents of the Prairie Mission Retirement Center in St. Paul, Kansas. She retired to Mt. St. Mary's Convent in 2011 where she enjoyed her ministry of prayer.
Sr. Julita was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Nellie Paulie, five brothers and five sisters. She is survived by one sister, Frances McCauley and many nieces and nephews.
A Visitation at 5:00 p.m. and a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. will be at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in St. Paul, KS, Thursday, April 29, 2021. And then, due to the pandemic, private services will be held for residents of Mt. St. Mary's Convent at a later date. Interment will be in the convent cemetery.
