Mt. Hope, Kansas - Marion "Diane" (Spain) Pierce-Downer, age 76, passed away at Harry Hynes Hospice in Wichita, KS, on Sunday, April 10, 2022.
Diane was born February 26, 1946, in Cunningham, KS. She is survived by husband Thomas Downer, Mt Hope, KS; two sons Gary (Jenny) Pierce, Kansas City, KS, Raubin (Kelly) Pierce, Topeka KS; sister Sharron Weve, Haven, KS; five grandchildren she loved very much, Jean Cumbie, KC, MO, David (Stephanie) Johns, Dallas, TX, Nicholas (Alley) Pierce, KC, KS, Stella and Scarlett Pierce, Topeka KS; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Wilbur Spain and Marion Christian, her husband of 49 years, Freddie Pierce, and sisters Sibyl Abbey and Janice Wesley.
Diane worked full time at Fitzgerald's Grocery in Mt Hope while studying accounting after hours. After receiving her associates degree, she worked at Kansas State Bank and Trust in Wichita. She later worked for the State of Department for Children and Families in their support division and the Mt Hope Post Office.
Diane was past chair of the Mount Hope Pride Committee, a member of the Mt Hope Stitch and Stir Family and Community Education, The American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, The Ladies' of the Oriental Shrine and enjoyed her time as an election poll worker.
Diane was an incredible storyteller with an unforgettable laugh. She was quick witted with a great sense of humor and loved telling jokes. She enjoyed traveling the country in her RV, playing games - especially bingo - and had a special way of being able to strike up a conversation and becoming immediate friends with anyone she met.
Funeral services will be 10:30am Friday, April 15, 2022 at Mount Hope United Methodist Church. Visitation will be 5-7pm Thursday, April 14, 2022 at Wulf-Ast Mortuary Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the following organizations: Mount Hope EMS and Mount Hope PRIDE, both at 112 W. Main Street, Mt. Hope, Kansas 67108
