Marvin Appling Obituary

Appling, Marvin R., 80, passed on July 20, 2011 in his home, surrounded by his family. Marvin was born February 7, 1931 in Wichita, KS. He grew up on a farm in Kechi. He was a resident of Sedgwick County for the rest of his life. As a child, he was baptized at the Kechi Methodist Church of Christ and later a member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church. A graduate of East High School in 1949, he continued his education at Wichita State University. Marvin enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 and deployed to Pusan, South Korea. He was dismissed with an Honorable Discharge as a Sergeant 1st Class in Dec 1954. He was a Commander, advocate, and lifelong member of the VFW Post #112. He was also a supportive member of the American Legion. After returning from war, a fender bender on Arkansas Avenue prompted him to pursue his education in Law. Marvin went on to Washburn University in Topeka, KS, worked his way through law school and graduated in 1959. In the midst of all of these life changes, he went with a friend to an apartment on New Years' Day morning in 1957 and met Carol Mae Cook. The two went out for hamburgers and were married August 17, 1958. Following law school, he served as a County Attorney and then worked with various Law Firms in Wichita, KS. After retiring from his own private practice, he joined Slape & Howard Law Firm in 1998 and ended with the firm in 2005. He continued to do pro-tem judgments until ending his career in 2010. He also served as a Special Administrative Law Judge in the Kansas Division of Worker's Compensation. Growing up right after the depression, Marvin valued hard work, fairness, honesty, and recognized that little guymattered. He practiced law for more than 50 years and made close and dear friends wherever he went. The patriarch of his family, Marvin was an extremely devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Rose Appling, and sister Una Mae. Surviving family include wife, Carol Appling; daughters Karla Appling, Annie Appling, Carrie Hutto; son in law John Hutto and 6 grandchildren, all of Wichita. Funeral service: Saturday, July 23, at 3:00 pm at Resthaven Mortuary in Wichita, KS. Memorials have been established with Young Hunter Safety, Inc., 1365 N Broadway Rd., Peck, KS 67120 and Robert J. Mr. Appling would frequently come into the Register of Deeds office where I had the pleasure of filing his documents over the course of 18 years. He was a very delightful person. I enjoyed knowing him. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family. God Bless.

To Carol and Family
Sorry to hear of Marvin's passing. I used to work for Marvin in the County Attorney's office many years ago. Later he represented me in a legal matter. I know how much he loved his family. The years do go by so quickly.
