Rocky Mountains, near Meeker Park Lodge, Colorado - Michael S. Wilson died peacefully Aug. 5, 2021, in the Rocky Mountains with his golden retriever, Beau, by his side. He was camping with Jesse, his oldest son, and dozed off for a little nap. It was his big heart that slowed to a stop. He was 72 years old.
Blessed with a winning smile, great sense of humor, loving heart and without a judgmental bone in his body, Mike was a people person, putting relationships above everything else.
Mike raised his family and worked in Wichita, Kansas, holding positions with City Life Magazine, Wichita Business Journal and founding, Trace Communications, which published Contrails, the McConnell Air Force Base newspaper. Retiring from communications, he worked as a teacher for USD259.
Mike was a romantic Irishman. He knew history and earned a bachelor of arts in English literature from Wichita State University after graduating from Wichita East High School. He could quote verse, play piano and accordion, appreciate antiques and tell a joke, well — like an Irishman.
Mike was born on Kansas Day, Jan. 29, 1949 in Sterling, Colorado. He died in Roosevelt National Forest near Longs Peak, Colorado. He is survived by his sons, Jesse Michael Kansas McCullough Wilson (Rachel) and Samuel Tanner Sky McCullough Wilson, their mother, Madeline McCullough, his friend, Susan Maple, his siblings, Debbie, Joel and Patrick Wilson and Mary Cook, their families, his extended family and countless friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Stanley and Polly Ann Wilson and his brother, James. There will be a private celebration of Mike's life later this month. Contact the family for details. Memorials may be made to Special Olympics of Kansas in his son's name — Tanner Wilson.
