Sophia Spencer Obituary

Spencer, Sophia Rodriguez, 87, died May 24, 2009 at Park West Nursing Home in Wichita, Kansas. She was born on July 20, 1921 in Concho, Arizona. Her parents were Benigno and Lucinda Lopez. She was the youngest of four children. All preceded her in death. On May 2, 1937, she married Paul M. Rodriguez in Concho, Arizona. From there they moved to Winslow, Arizona where Paul taught school and Sophia helped run their locally owned grocery store. They later moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he was a teacher and she managed apartments they owned. He preceded her in death in 1969. In 1980 she moved from Phoenix, Arizona to Garden City, Kansas. She married Dan Spencer of Garden City. He preceded her in death in 1996. Sophia was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, The Newman Club, and the Healing Love Prayer Group. All in Garden City. In 2000 she moved to Elk City, Oklahoma where she was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and the Garden Club. Sophia enjoyed sewing, crafts and making quilts for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In 2006 she moved to Wichita, Kansas. She attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Sophia loved spending time with family and friends especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Preceded in death by grandson-in-law Douglas Meyer. Survivors include her son Dr. Paul and Nancy Rodriguez of Wichita, Kansas; 5 grandchildren and their spouses and 13 great grandchildren. Memorial established with Park West Nursing Home.
