ALLAN COON Obituary

Allan Eugene Coon, a local attorney and resident of Shawnee, Kan., passed away peacefully at home May 23, 2013, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was 49 years old. Allan was born Oct. 1, 1963, in Princeton, Mo., to Winton Eugene Coon and Twyla Jane (Wright) Coon. Mr. Coon graduated from Princeton High School in 1981. Throughout his youth he enjoyed playing basketball and golf and was an avid sports fan. In 1981 he attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo., obtaining a BA in accounting in 1985, and a BS in education with a minor in coaching athletics in 1987, graduating cum laude. He began his study of law in 1989, at UMKC, in Kansas City, Mo. Allan ranked first in his UMKC law school class in 1992, receiving numerous American Jurisprudence awards for his classroom work, together with academic honors. He began his legal career in 1992 when he graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law. After graduating from law school in 1992, Allan accepted a position as an associate at Morrison & Hecker in Kansas City. He worked with Watson & Marshall law firm in 1994, where he remained until accepting his present position at Hubbard, Ruzicka, Kreamer & Kincaid in 1996. He became a member of the firm in 1999. His practice encompassed civil litigation, with a specialty in appellate work, and complex research and writing projects. Mr. Coon was also experienced in post-divorce, general litigation, criminal defense, defamation, and international law. He participated in appellate briefing or argument before the Kansas and Missouri Courts of Appeals, the Kansas and Missouri Supreme Courts, and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Eighth, Tenth and Federal Circuits. Mr. Coon was a member of the Kansas and Missouri Bar Associations, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association and the Johnson County Bar Association. Allan met Deborah in 1997, and they were united in marriage in 2001. Allan enjoyed spending time with his family, having fun times playing with grandchildren, and watching them grow. He enjoyed nothing more than a vigorous argument at appellate courts here in Johnson County, Kan., and just with his partners. Allan was passionate about music, especially rock music of all genres, and classic American and foreign films. His hobbies included hiking, biking, basketball, baseball and basketball fantasy leagues, playing trivia, and Texas hold 'em poker. Allan had a passion for hiking mountains, stating that one of the most exhilarating moments of his life was hiking Gray's Peak in Colorado. Allan, you will be deeply missed at work. I so enjoyed our talks about poker and computers and the luncheons we took to the Tea Garden.
