I remember with fondness the canoe trips that
we took with you and Joe. The times that we all went over in the cold cold water.
The times we spent with you in Vail and how you were so patient with this long time, but not very good skiier.
The time you spent with two of us to try to teach two old school teachers how to swim
before we sailed to the Leeward Islands.
Barbie..you were such a great teacher.

What an EXCEPTIONAL lady! What a privilege to know her and have experienced her presence.

I was fortunate to have had Mrs. Van Hook as one of my teachers and friend. I had the opportunity to work with her in many Red Cross demonstrations and swim functions. I also had the opportunity to work with her and her Mother doing odd jobs around her lake home. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. A LSHS '65 Grad.

Paulla: How do I begin? If one reads how Webster's defines the word "teacher," they will find a beautiful description of your Mother. The positive ways she touched so many lives is, without question, phenomenal. It is a true honor to have the privilege to have known her as a colleague and friend. A lovely lady! I will never forget the day she came into my office, closed the door, and wept because she was afraid she wasn't "reaching" all of the students in her physics class. After quite some time we came to the conclusion that we so often reach for perfection in our efforts to reach our life goals, we must understand that we are working with individuals whose expectations in life are somewhat less than those we have for them. Finally I saw that beautiful warm smile return and the sparkle return to her eyes. We hugged, and I still believe the day became better for both of us. Also, I remember the canoe I bought from her, and how pleased she was to later see it rebuilt. That lead to the day she gave me the magogany-sheath life saving canoe because it was in need of repair and she didn't want to see it go to ruin - then how happy she was when I took it by and showed her how my son and I had rebuilt it. Paulla, believe it or not, that canoe is now a collector's item, and is hanging under my deck, in great condition! I value it a great deal because "Barbie" gave it to me! I know how proud of her you must be. I can think of one way to describe her life. "Tour de force!" Take care and God Bless.

Mrs. Van Hook, definately one of the best teachers and well remembered by this Lotawana lake rat and Lee's Summit high grad 1964. More than a teacher, she was a friend to her students.
