BENJAMIN SHIVELY Obituary

Benjamin Lee Shively, 38, Overland Park, Kan., suddenly passed away July 19, 2014, at North Kansas City Hospital from complications related to a senseless car accident on July 2, 2014. Visitation is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 25 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 11300 W. 103rd St., Overland Park, KS 66214. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 p.m. Burial will be at Mount Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes Rd, KCMO, 64131 following the Mass. Brian and Sherry Shively blessed us with Ben's birth on June 30, 1976, in Denver, Colo. Being obstinate from the start, Ben tried to back into the world. Ben and his family moved to Overland Park in 1977. He spent the next several years being a best friend to his older brother, Matthew, and an inspiration to his younger sister, Meg. He attended Oak Park Elementary and Indian Woods Middle School. He went to Rockhurst High School and graduated from Shawnee Mission South. He graduated college form University of Central Missouri in 2000 with a degree in Computer Science and Math. Be- fore UCM, he attended and played soccer at Johnson County Community College, Rockhurst College and UMKC. Ben loved new experiences. He was riding a bike and swimming be- fore other kids his age. He played all the sports kids play. His favorite might have been baseball; but he also excelled at swimming and soccer. Ben's determination to succeed was unmatched. Things did not al- ways come easily to him. As a young adolescent, Ben wanted to play on a premier soccer team called the Comets. He tried out and was cut. Naturally, that only challenged Ben. Determined to play for them, he practiced extensively and won a spot on the team the following year. Ben made many lifelong friends from that team. They started out loving his spirit and began realizing his many unique characteristics. He would be their devoted friend and, for some of them, a loyal, energetic teammate in high school and college. It was at Rockhurst College where he met his love, Christy Neenan. Ben and Christy were well matched. They married on Aug. 12, 2000. Ben loved the size and closeness of her family. He also loved they were Catholic; something he had considered since his days with the Comets. Ben converted to Catholicism in 2000. He demonstrated great zest with his conversion, as he did with everything. During the ceremony, he shouted out his presence when his name was called. That energy caused the priest to proclaim, "Now that man wants to be a Catholic!" Ben did all things that way - brashly with aggressiveness and eager anticipation. Ben became passionate about the food service industry while working at Planet Sub. Wanting more, he saw opportunity with Golden Corral to establish his own restaurant. After a few years training in Denver, he was determined to come back home and own a Golden Coral. He realized that goal and his peers elected him to the Franchise Advisory Council after only one year as a franchise owner. It was not enough for him; so he opened a second Golden Coral in St. Joseph, Mo. He knew his guests names and made them feel welcomed. He considered his employees and guests as a second family. For the last several years, Ben and Christy have been raising their four beautiful children, Samantha, Olivia, Lucy and Tyler, in his childhood neighborhood. They made friend- ships that he cherished. Ben could not have enough friends. More friends meant a richer life. If you befriended Ben once, it was for life. He made an impression on most of the people he met. Ben is survived by his wife, Christina Neenan Shively, their children, Samantha (12), Olivia (11), Lucy (8), and Tyler (5); parents, Brian and Sherry Shively of Overland Park; brother, Mathew Shively of Arvada, Colo.; sister, Meg Kaemmer (Kyle); grandmother, Mildred Shively; in- laws, Mike and Linda Neenan; sisters-in-law, Louisa Weinrich (Jeff), Sarah Mallon (Mike); brothers-in- law, Kevin Neenan (Lee), Andrew Neenan (Lara), Patrick Neenan and Michael Neenan. He was a fun uncle to 20 nieces and nephews. He is survived by many, many friends. He was preceded in death by son, Ian; grandparents, Lois and Francis Farris; grandfather, Bob Shively; aunt, Sheila Farris; brother-in-law, Stephen Neenan; and his most loyal friend and longtime pet, Smokey. In the last three weeks there has been innumerable family and friends that offered heart felt support. Christy and the Shively family would like to thank all of these wonderful people. In lieu of flowers, the family re- quests donations be made to the Shively Family Fund, c/o Country Club Bank, 9400 Mission Rd, Leawood, KS 66208. Offer condolences at www.mcgilleyhoge.com M

Dear Christy,

I could not believe this news when I heard it on the news. Christy, my heart aches for you and our precious children! Memories of Samantha, Olivia and our Maxie playing at ages 4-5 years old, as neighbors, is all too vivid! I remember Ben coming down, when he was home from work, to get the girls from our house for dinner! Several times the girls would excitedly tell me they were so looking forward to Daddy being home at a certain time!! Our family is brokenhearted to learn of this tragedy. You, the children and both of your families will continue to be in our prayers.

Warmly,
The Crimm Family

So very sorry to hear about Mr. Shively passing away. Our family gathered at the Golden Corral in North Kansas City nearly every Sunday for a year and then when the St. Joseph Golden Corral opened we were excited to see Mr. Shively's grand smile once again. I even approached him and said, "By chance are you from the NKC restaurant. His smile beamed with pride and he replied "Yes, I knew your family then and am glad to see you here at my new restaurant." God places certain people in the lives of others and we are thankful. Mr. Shively made a difference, he made his customers always feel welcome. He will be missed! Keeping Mr. Shively's wife, daughters and son and his other loved ones in our thoughts and prayers.

I met Ben at Golden Corral in Kansas City when on a Thursday night they ran out of Pecan Pies. He took me to the kitchen and assured me my trip from St Joseph wasn't going to end without a pecan pie. We went on to become good friends and we talked and talked of him starting the Golden corral in St Joseph. I feel like the world has lost a special person, he always had time for the customers and even sat at our table and told us of a camping trip he had just went on. I have two sons his age. While I do not know his family my heart is broken to have lost this special person. He will be sorely missed by myself and my wife who always had to talk to Ben before we could come back home.

My deepest sympathies go out to Christy and the entire Shively family as they try to cope with this senseless and tremendous loss. I had the pleasure of playing soccer with Ben for several years in high school, college and club ball with the Comets. His passion was exhibited in all aspects of his life from the playing field to the classroom, his humor was that of a comedic genius and always had all of us teammates in tears we would laugh so hard at his antics, his intensity was always 200% no matter what he was doing and you always knew that if you needed someone on your side he would be the first one there. He was truly a unique individual, one of a kind, someone special, a great teammate, a great friend and touched the lives of so many. I pray all those involved will find peace and strength in one another as they continue to grieve and we will keep you in our thoughts and prayers for some time to come. Ben played a huge role in showing me the ropes when I was a young manger at cactus grill. He was someone who worked tirelessly for bigger and better things for his family. He had a great sense of humor and loved telling stories of silly things his kids, who were all young at the time, did or said. His eyes just lit up when he talked about his family! What a blessing his four children will be in continuing Ben's legacy. I feel so lucky to have known Ben and to have gotten the chance to learn about running a restaurant from him.

We loved Ben and his vibrant personality as he and Dusty grew up together and through The Comets organization, playing soccer together. Ben showed such sweet tenderness to Kate (6 years younger).
