Bettie Swiontek Obituary

Bettie Swiontek died August 30, 2025, due to cancer.

She was born Elizabeth Adams Robuck on May 26, 1945, in Fayette, Mo. She and her parents, Earl Adams Robuck and Sue Mason Robuck, and her younger sister, Susan Lee Robuck, lived in Joplin, Mo. until 1955, when they moved to Mission Woods, Ks.

Bettie married Jim Nielsen, and they had a son, David, in 1963. Following a divorce, Bettie earned an education degree from UMKC. After teaching for several years, she worked for the Social Security Administration in KC, and the Western Historical Manuscripts Collection at UMKC.

In 1990 she married Ted Swiontek. In 2009, they retired to Brookside, Utah, near St. George.

Bettie was a faithful member of the Lutheran Church and sang in church choirs her entire life. She loved reading, the Royals & Chiefs and hundreds of movies and TV shows - the DVR was likely her favorite invention!

She cared deeply about democracy, serving as an election day poll worker and helping hundreds of new citizens register to vote. A staunch Democrat, she remained outspoken and optimistic about our country's future.

Above all else, she was devoted to her family. Survivors include her husband, Ted, son David Nielsen (Colleen), granddaughter Erika Nielsen, sister Susan Cummings, nephew Patrick McGee (Katie), and niece Kelly McGaw (Erin). Services at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, September 6, at New Promise Lutheran Church in St. George, UT. A full obituary is available here: https://www.serenitystg.com/obituaries/.
