BRONIA ROSLAWOWSKI Obituary

Bronia Roslawowski, age 88, of Kansas City, died July 14, 2010, at Menorah Medical Center. She was born in Turek, Poland, on December 23, 1921, to Hersh and Bluma Kibel. As a child, she was educated at Beis Yaakov. During World War II, Bronia was imprisoned in several Nazi concentration camps including Auschwitz. After being liberated by the United States Army (for which she was always grateful to America), she worked with the Army in displaced persons' camps. In 1948, Bronia immigrated to the United States. Not knowing where to settle, she asked where President Truman was from and decided that if Missouri was a good place for the president's family, it would be a good place for hers. In her early years in Kansas City, she had many jobs including caring for newborns at Baptist Hospital. She often worked three jobs to support her children. For many years, she and her husband Mendel owned M & M Bakery where Bronia passed out love and doughnuts to generations of children, and bread and sandwiches to their families. She was proud of the success of all of those who worked with her, particularly those who continued in the bakery business. Bronia frequently spoke to schools and community groups about her experiences during the Holocaust, teaching messages of love and justice. "I don't hate the Nazis," she would say, "so no one has the right to hate." She taught that she was saved by righteous Jews and non-Jews alike. "Look out for your neighbor because, if you don't, no one else will." Bronia was unfailingly loving, and she herself was loved by people from every part of the community. As she always said, "What a baker puts into the oven, she takes out of the oven." Bronia was predeceased by her parents and all of her siblings, by her husband Mendel Roslawowski and her previous husband Willie Jacks, and by a granddaughter, Lisa Beth Rosel. She is survived by her children Beverly Jacks Sklover (Philip), Walter Rosel, Karen Lynn Rosel, Alice Jacks Achtenberg (David), and Judy Jacks Berman (Steve); by her grandchildren Anne Rosel French (Brian), David Julian Rosel, Joseph Michael Jacks Berman, Miriam Jacks Achtenberg (Michael Morse), Alanna Michelle Jacks Sklover (Rebecca Kirzner), Jeffrey Samuel Jacks Berman (Courtney), Samuel Jacks Sklover, Joseph Jacks Sklover, and Rebecca Jacks Achtenberg; and great-grandchildren Brandon Tyler French and Alexis Lisa French. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 16, in the sanctuary of Beth Shalom Synagogue, 95th and Wornall, Kansas City, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education, the Heritage Center of the Jewish Community Center, or the Beth Shalom - Rose Family Early Childhood Education Center. The family wishes to thank Bronia's caregivers at Village Shalom, Enhanced Home Care, and the doctors, nurses and staff of Menorah Medical Center. R.I.P. As a young Child in the 1950s. Doing one of my outings with my Sister and Father. He took us to meet Mrs. Bronia at her Deli. She showed me the prison tattoo numbers on her lower arm to help with my curiosity of it. That special day has always been stored in the corners of my mind. She was such a Sweet, Kind and friendly Lady to everyone. My Dad was from Louisiana and was one of the known Kansas City Southern Food Street Vendors. Kosher item was feature as part of his menu to purchase and sale. Today I would like to express and share to Mrs Bronia Family and all of the Holocaust Survivors with Cherish and my Heartfelt Memory. Dear Judy,
I was reviewing all the old editions of the Focal Point when I discovered the loss of your Mother. One of my son's and my favorite memories are of seeing and speaking with her at Shul. She had the most incredible capacity for compassion and kindness ever found. She was a true Eshes Chayil. May her memory be a blessing that empowers others.

Dear Alice & Family,
Your mother and grandmother embodied the strength and grace of God to all who entered her doors. Her indominatable spirit shone as an inspiration. She mothered me on my way to work & I still can savor the taste of her french onion rolls with corned beef, mustard & pickle! Blessings and comfort to you.

Judy, your mother was so very special, not only to you and your family, but to everyone who knew her. Since I now live so very far away, I can't pay a shiva call or attend the funeral, but I want you to know how much I cared about Bronia and how much we admired her and looked forward to seeing her each Shabbat. May your memories sustain you, and may her soul be bound with all those in Ereta Yisrael. Please accept our deepest condolences.

Just stumbled upon Mrs. Roslawowski's story and bought an autographed copy of Love the World today. So sad that I was too late to meet such an inspiring lady in person. The owner of The Scandanavian Place spoke so highly of her. Seeing the beautiful family wedding photo and thinking of the world's loss had your mother, grandmother not been so courageous and loving - my deepest sympathy to all of you. .

David and Alice and all -

I'm writing this - a thousand miles away - as Bronia's service is occurring. I just found out about her passing. She remains an inspiration - the Zeeck family quotes her often. I remember her telling me that people told her to move M & M from its longtime location for safety, but she said she'd faced the Nazis and so wasn't afraid of a few neighborhood kids. Amazing courage all her life. We share your grief....

Bronia had a profound impact on our daughter Keiley. We so appreciate the time she spent with her. It's clear her philosophy, spirtual faith and hope were very much the reason for her success in this life. May her family celebrate the blessings this woman bestowed on so many. Our condolences to all of you. Sincerely, Keith and Jan Keirsey

Bronia will alway live in the hearts and memories of those she loved and touched in her life, those who loved her as a friend, sister, mother and grandma.

I was just a young girl from China in 1985, hardly speaking any English. She took me into her home and under her wings and tought me the meaning of love and life. Although I left Kansas City more than 20 years ago, Bronia and I had always kept in touch. I loved her like my own mother and she was the most loving "grandma Bronia" to my kids. She will be terribly missed but her memories will live on.

We all love you very very much Bronia! Please rest in peace......

Dear Judy, Alice and Beverly,

I am so sad to read of the passing your beloved mother. Bronia, despite the hardships of her life, never lost her love for the world, her hope for the future and her trust in the goodness of others. She gave love (and doughuts) to so many. I remember visiting her when I was a child at M&M Bakery and watching as she gave free food to neighborhood kids who had no money, saying she could and would never turn away a hungry child. That moral teaching from her and that memory of her has stayed with me all of my life. She leaves such an incredible legacy which each of you have lived up to with your own incredible lives of social justice, belief in children and the future. May her memory be a blessing.
