C. WHITTAKER Obituary

C. Keith Whittaker, MD, was born into eternal life on Friday, October 7 surrounded by the people who meant most to him in this life. Dr. Whittaker was born September 4, 1932, the son of Justice Charles E. Whittaker and Winifred Pugh Whittaker. He was raised in Kansas City, attending St. Elizabeth grade school and Rockhurst High School. During high school he met his match, his mate, and his guiding love, Patricia Collins, the woman who would share his wonderful journey for the remainder of his life. He attended Princeton University, then medical school at Northwestern University, and residency in neurosurgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Following a two-year assignment with the U.S. Air Force in San Antonio, he returned to KU to finish his training. He practiced mainly at St. Luke's Hospital, but was on staff at several area hospitals. His skill as a surgeon, his dogged pursuit of proper diagnosis, and his complete intolerance of anything short of perfection were legendary in the medical community. He touched many lives in his career, as a healer, a mentor, and a teacher. His superior intellect and pursuit of excellence belied the humble man who never forgot that his extraordinary talents were gifts from a generous God. Although he was devoted to his role as a doctor, his true passion was family, with whom he spent all of his time away from work. He and Pat raised seven children and were blessed with 23 grandchildren. Family dinners, whether here in Kansas City or at any of the numerous locations where he delighted to travel with his family, were a treasure that resulted in many happy meals and memories which we carry with us in his absence. Though he suffered in his final years, no complaint or self-pity was ever heard from his mouth. To know him was a gift, to love him a treasure. Those of us who knew and loved him carry an imprint on our hearts and we are richer for the experience. Keith was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Gary, and his son Brian, who are rejoicing at being reunited. He leaves to miss his enormous presence his wife of 57 years, Pat, sons Tom (Lissa), John (Anne), and Martin, daughters, Ann Lindboe (Dan), Laura Gibson (Bob), and Mary Coit (Ken), and the 23 grandchildren who loved their Papa as a playmate and prankster. Friends may call on the family at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 5250 Mission Road, Roeland Park, KS on Tuesday, October 11 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Agnes Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 12 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Sisters, Servants of Mary, 800 N. 18th St., KCKS 66102, Rockhurst High School, 9301 State Line Rd. Those Damn Fagan Kids

April 17, 2012

Keith and Pat were the only people who were not immediate members of the Bill Fagan family, who were present at his bedside when he passed away. Pop had a definite fondness for his cousin Keith, since he saw himself as an amateur Brain Surgeon when he wasn't busy being "The Bishop"...." too bad I had so many damn kids" he'd say...

I can't imagine anyone owing as much to my cousin Keith as I do... Through all the terrible neurosurgical circumstances I threw at him, he never gave up on me. And after each episode, where I would wake up from a coma, and he'd walk in the room and see that I was "back", we would just look at each other and start laughing about "cheating satan again".... I LOVED Keith Whittaker. I owe my life to him. And I think he made me funnier, somehow, each time he split my noggin open. His protege's have all done a great job on followup, but 'The Original' will always have a special place in my heart. Goodbye, Cousin. "Steady with that knife." And thank you Sharon Hughes for all your help!

Dear Family,

Dr. Whittaker cared for our son,Scott, in 1978 at St. Lukes following a fall from the high dive at our local swim pool fracturing his skull. He was stung by a bee prior to the fall. Dr. Whittaker was fantastic. We will always remember his wonderful care at that stressful time in our life. Scott recovered very well and is doing very well. He has lovely wife and four children.
Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

I have been a patient of Dr. Whittaker and know him as a man of no nonsense and straight talk. He will be missed by many. He did a great deal of good at St Lukes in volunteer work and was a good family man. I am still a patient of his son and know him to be a good man also. God Bless all of you. I will keep you in my prayers.

I have so many memories, but the most important to me is receiving Communion from you the Sunday after my surgery. It was Grace and the Holy Spirit that walked through that door with you that morning. May you be in His Grace forever. My love and prayers and the love and prayers of my family are with Aunt Pat and my cousins.

I will always remember the Sunday dinners and Keith always interested in what I was doing and asking me how I was. He was such a dear sweet man. And I adored watching him with his grandchildren. He was like another father to me in many ways. I love you Keith. Love to my Aunt Pat and all my wonderful cousins. Love you guys. You are in our prayers.
