Charles Catlin Obituary

Charles E. Catlin Jr., a longtime Manhattan, KS resident, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2004, in the St. Anthony North Hospital, Westminster, CO. He was born January 15, 1921 in Miltonvale, KS, the son of Charles E. Catlin Sr. and Ona E. (Patch) Catlin. The Catlin's later moved to Clay Center, KS, where Charlie graduated from Clay Center High School in 1938. Shortly after high school, his family moved to Manhattan. Charlie enlisted in the Army in 1942, where he was a member of L. Company, 276th Infantry Regiment, 70th Division as a medic in both France and Germany, being awarded the American Theater Service Ribbon, EuropeanAfrican-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, two Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. While serving as a medic he simultaneously performed the duties of baker for his company. Prior to his separation from the Army in 1946 he reached the status of corporal. After leaving the Army, Charlie worked for the United States Army Corps of Engineers-Geology Section, Kansas City Division until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the Black Jack American Legion Post, St. George, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, James Maurice Catlin; one sister, Grayce L. (Catlin) Umscheid; and his former wife, Frances C. (Cox) Catlin. Survivors include two sons, Ron Catlin and Lonnie Catlin, both of Denver; one granddaughter, Deana M. Garvin, Denver; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, January 24, at the Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, 1317 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS. Cremation will follow with inurnment at a later date. The family of Mr. Catlin will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or the National Kidney Foundation and left in care of the funeral home. (Arr: IrvinParkview Funeral Home 785-537-2110)
