Daniel Amelung Obituary

Daniel Lee Amelung was the grandson of the late Daniel F. Giudici of Giudici Brothers Monument Company later known as The Kansas City Monument Company. Daniel died July 12, 2008, at North Kansas City Hospital at the age of 56. Daniel was born on Jan. 19, 1952. At the age of 3 1/2 he was adopted by Kenneth R. Amelung and Juliet Viola Mallott Amelung. His grandfather, Giudici helped arrange the adoption so that he could watch and visit his grandson until Mr. Giudici's death at the age of 62 on June 7, 1957. He leaves behind family and friends who will miss him dearly. Daniel Amelung worked at Boyles Meat Company as a billing clerk and The Cook Paint and Varnish Company in North Kansas City as a delivery clerk. He was employed by Townley Sentry Hardware Company in Lenexa, Kan., for six years until forced to retire at the age of 32 due to multiple medical conditions. Mr. Amelung was active in aiding his friends and neighbors and particularly in helping to care for the elderly. He served as Power of Attorney for several elderly people over the years, seeing that their taxes and utilities were paid and helping them with grocery shopping and cooking duties. Following the death of his father, Kenneth R. Amelung on May 10, 1993, Daniel moved in to care for his mother, Juliet Viola Mallot Amelung, on a full time basis until her death on July 9, 2006, at the age of 96. Daniel continued his community works in aiding the elderly. Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at the Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kansas City North, with visitation an hour before service time at the church. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Osage City Cemetery in Osage City, Kan. Arr.: VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, Osage City.

I met Daniel many years ago. He brought his mother to our ER several times for treatment. I got to know Daniel pretty well over the years. I am saddened to hear of his passing. My thoughts are with his family and many friends.

My earliest memory of a cousin is playing Mike-n-Ikes with Danny. We had a really good time whenever Uncle Kenneth would come out to California to go fishing with my dad, Wes Bickford. I remember that when we would go down to Mexico to fish they always had to bring Danny's birth certificate with them because Danny was such a dark, handsome guy - unlike everyone else in the car!
We were all lucky to know Danny and we'll all miss him.

I knew Dan since Julie & Kenneth adopted him. I often spent weeks at a time staying with the Amelungs, through my grade-school years.

Dan overcame severe hearing difficulties and physical problems that plagued him most of his life. Those problems -- along with a trusting and generous nature -- sometimes allowed him to be taken advantage of. But he rose above that to became a reliable friend to many who had need of a friend.

His devoted care for Julie in her declining years was one of the best examples of filial devotion that I have ever seen, and is an inspiration to all who knew them.
