David Epstein Obituary

David H. Epstein David H. Epstein, 86, passed away at home in Overland Park on September 25 th , surrounded by the people who loved him. David was actually born as Herman Goldberg in St. Louis on January 19, 1932, and was adopted shortly thereafter by his loving parents, Bluma and Morris Epstein. He grew up in Kansas City helping out at his parents' grocery store and graduated from Central High School. Drafted during the Korean War, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and spent his service in Korea before coming back to KC and beginning his career in the insurance industry. He loved the insurance business and worked for 62 years in various positions as agent, broker, owner, and mentor. In his earlier years he was married to the former Betty Alport, with whom he had four children. For the last 49 years, he was married to Judith Spitcaufsky Epstein, and enjoyed a life of travel, cooking and smoking BBQ, Film Festivals, family events, and great friends and neighbors. He was a very proud Marine and enjoyed many meetings and reunions with fellow Korean Vets and their spouses. David was predeceased by his parents, Morris and Bluma Epstein and, his daughter Marta Shipman. He is survived by his wife Judith, and sons Mike and Mark Epstein, daughter Mindy and son-in-law Steve Levine, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. A short notice like this cannot begin to describe his wit, kindness, and wonderful smile. His family is extremely grateful to the nurses and staff in the Oncology, Short Stay and Infusion Centers at St. Luke's South who all helped him and treated him like their own family. Our heartfelt thanks also to Anna Nixon from St. Luke's Hospice and Linda Meadows and her staff from Okelani Home Health Care during David's final days. There will be a Celebration of David Epstein's Life on October 6, 2018 at 1:00pm at Village Shalom's Social Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Wayside Waifs of charity of your choice.

The Epstein children and the Commans children grew up right up the street from reach other. Their family has always been part of our lives and we have been blessed with close friendships with all the family. David was a wonderful man, father, and neighbor - the Commans family will always treasure the memory of David and we are comforted that he is now at peace.

David will be truly missed, as a friendly and congenial neighbor and a fellow Korean War Veteran. We enjoyed some good times with David and Judith.

David was one of the most honorable and considerate men I have known. I was blessed to be part of his life as a friend and an associate in the insurance business.
David was responsible for introducing me to my wife, Kay. I thanked him many times for that.
I will miss David.
