David McCormick Obituary

David Dale McCormick

June 19, 1952 - December 9, 2023

Bend, OREGON - In Memory of David McCormick

[Bend, Oregon] - [Dec. 9, 2023]

David McCormick, formerly of Kansas City, passed away on December 9, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and a deep love for his family. Born to Dale and Glenda McCormick in Salina, Kansas, David's journey was characterized by his commitment to his work and his devotion to those he held dear.

David was a creative force turned accomplished mechanical engineer. David's artistic talent during his formative years earned him the title of class artist. Transitioning into mechanical engineering, he thrived in his career, embracing new technologies until his retirement. Establishing his own product design firm, he accumulated numerous patents, leaving an indelible mark on his field.

His love story with Martha began at the Hawk bar in Lawrence, KS, where they met "across a crowded room." Their enduring love spanned 40 years of marriage, blessed with two daughters, Hallie and Eliza. Family was everything to David, and his bond with his only grandchild, Eleanor, brought him immense joy.

During the pandemic, David watched Eleanor every day during the week while her parents worked. They created cherished memories together from casual strolls in "sleeping dog park" and "Mattie's Eagle" to enjoying local treats at McClains bakery.

Even in retirement, David continued his passion for project engineering, collaborating with his son-in-law on educational projects and building a coffee roaster from household items.

David's one indulgence was in a top-of-the-line espresso machine. He loved making cappuccinos for friends and family, and even designed his coffee tools from a 3-D printer to create the perfect espresso pull.

David found solace in the outdoors, particularly as an avid gravel cyclist and participated in the Dirty Kanza race in Emporia, KS. In June, David embarked on a new outdoor adventure and moved to Bend, Oregon, to be closer to his granddaughter, family. Despite facing the challenges of cancer, he embraced the beauty of Oregon's landscapes, spending blissful days hiking along the Deschutes River and creating special moments with family.

David is preceded in death by his father, Dale McCormick, mother, Glenda McCormick, brother, Dana McCormick, and his mother-in-law, Mary Brink.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites friends and well-wishers to donate to the Deschutes Land Trust.
