Kansas City, Missouri - Dennis Lee Howell passed away on October 18, 2025 in Kansas City, Mo. Dennis was a talented artist with a flair for the dramatic, in theater (Don Quixote in the musical Man of La Mancha and the baritone villain roles in the opera Tales of Hoffman); as a soloist at weddings and funerals; in designing his apartments, condominiums and homes; in dogs large (Great Danes) and small (tea-cup Yorkie); staging estate sales; and giving elegant gourmet dinners served with the finest China, silver and crystal on antique Irish linen tablecloths. Friends and family could rely on him for a kind listening ear, a hot meal, design tips and hands-on decorating assistance. He was a genius with power tools and a paintbrush.
He was born to Ronald and Florence Howell in Mason City, IA, and lived in Prairie Village, KS for his school years, graduating from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1973. His family moved to Omaha after graduation, but he returned to the KC area to study voice, first at UMKC and then at the University of Kansas. He next studied hair dressing in Omaha. His career as a hairdresser reached 50 years, first in Omaha and then in Kansas City at top salons on The Country Club Plaza and later as a sole proprietor at locations on the Plaza and in Brookside. He served several clients for over four decades and some families for four generations. Dennis would do anything to benefit his clients, and they, him. A visit to his salon was often a high point in one's day.
He is survived by his brother Craig (Melissa) Howell of Omaha, Neb., nephews Taylor and Dillon, and numerous cousins and friends.
