DOUGLAS SUTHERLAND Obituary

DOUGLAS A. SUTHERLAND Douglas A. Sutherland, 97, Raymore, MO, passed away December 14, 2017, at Foxwood Spring Living Center. Douglas was born April 29, 1920 in Chipman, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Archibald and Florence (Mackenzie) Sutherland. Their family moved from Canada when Doug was 8 years of age, to Horicon, WI. He had a happy childhood with Beth (his twin sister), his older sister Jean and his parents, and Wisconsin became his "home" State. Doug and Twila met at Ottawa University, Ottawa, KS, were married, after the war, on May 23, 1946, and are survived by two daughters Ann (Otis) and Carole (Eddy, deceased & Rob). Doug had 3 grandchildren, Caleb, Elizabeth (Ron) and Nicholas (Monica) and 4 great-grandchildren, Corbin, Alexis, Hunter and Nolan. Douglas also leaves two brother-in-laws, Calvin Kruse and Paul Miller. Preceding Doug in death are his wife Twila, parents, Archibald and Florence Sutherland, sisters, Jean Miller, and twin sister Beth (Wayne) Hinkle. Douglas graduated from Ottawa University after serving three years in the United States Army Air Corps. He graduated from George Williams College, Chicago, with a Master's Degree and worked as a YMCA Director for over 25 years, at which time he retired. Among his special "Y" achievements were directing the Iowa Youth and Government program with high school students, YMCA program development in south-eastern Iowa cities, Y's Men's Clubs, Y-Indian guide and starting a new District YMCA in Danbury, CT. In 1975 Doug responded to the call to enter the Christian Ministry. He graduated from St. Paul's School of Theology with a Master of Divinity Degree and ministered in Asbury United Methodist Church, St. Luke's UMC and as Sr. Pastor, in the Marionville UMC, Marionville, MO. After retiring from full-time ministry, Doug accepted the position of Interim Chaplain in Foxwood Springs Living Center (Retirement Community) for an 8 month period. This was followed with Interim Pastor responsibilities - with he and Twila working as a team - in the Archie, UMC, Camdenton UMC, Kearney UMC, Knob Noster UMC, and returning to the Archie UMC. Doug's life was one of Christian service and the words "Love", "Wonderful", and "An Understanding Ear" are all identifying words. Vocal music was always a special interest for him and his many Letters to the Editor of the Kansas City Star (aprox 100 or more) were a special joy. Visitation will take place 5-7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church 1111 W. Foxwood Drive, Raymore, MO. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the church follow by the burial at Raymore Cemetery with military honors. A memorial service will also be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Foxwood Retirement Living Center in Bromwell Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fellowship of John c/o Foxwood Retirement Living Center or St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Arr.: Cullen Funeral Home, Raymore, 816-322-5278.

I never knew Mr. Sutherland but I kept one of his editorials on my desk at at my office and, now that I've retired, it is on my desk at home. He wrote it when he was 93 and those are the best words to live by that I have ever read. He is with the angels now!

I was fortunate enough to meet Doug 8 months ago when I first started working at Foxwood. He was always so kind to me and told me how much he appreciated what I did for him. That meant so much to me. Often he would come into a room singing and would bring joy to so many of us at Foxwood. He is greatly missed.

Doug has been such a faithful friend and inspiration to me through the years. He was a gift to Lee's Summit UMC during his brief time on the staff while I was there. This has been true of every congregation he has served. I have read most of his letters in the KC Star and saved some of them. How many, many lives he has touched in an indelible way!
