Edwin Thompson Obituary

Edwin H.L. "Ted" Thompson, of Mission Hills, KS, passed away on October 11, 2003, in his home. A recipient of a liver transplant in 1986, Ted fought a long battle, but he inspired all who knew him as he lived life to the full with courage and an everpresent sense of humor. A memorial service will be held at noon on Tuesday, October 14, 2003, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 5250 Mission Rd., Fairway, KS. The burial will be private. The family requests no flowers, and suggests contributions to the Renal Care Group/St. Luke's Hospital, 4333 Madison, Kansas City, MO, 64111, or to Wayside Waifs Humane Society, 3901 E. 119th St., Kansas City, MO, 64137. Ted was born March 29, 1929, in Kansas City, MO, the youngest son of Helen and Mason Thompson. He was a graduate of the Pembroke-Country Day School, Kansas City, MO (1946), Phillips Andover Academy, Andover, MA (1947), and the University of Arizona (1951). He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, which he served as president. Ted was a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Ted was Chairman of the Board of Plastics Enterprises Co., Inc., a manufacturer based in Lee's Summit, MO, which he co-founded in the 1970's. Prior employment included service with CertainTeed Corp., Valley Forge, PA, Gustin-Bacon Manufacturing Co., Kansas City, MO, and Standard Steel Works, Kansas City, MO. Ted held lifelong devotions to hunting, his dogs, and golf. He was a member of the Kansas City Country Club, the River Club, the Kansas City Club, and Ducks Unlimited. He served as General Chairman of the United Way in Darien, CT. Surviving Ted are his wife, Mariel Tyler Thompson; daughter Hettie Sullivan of Boulder, CO and her husband Dan; grandchildren Wesley, Wynn, and Annie Sullivan; sisters-in-law Betty Thompson and Barbara Thompson; stepchildren Ted McDermand and Lynn McDermand of Crested Butte, CO; and six nieces and nephews. Ted was preceded in death by his brothers Mason Thompson and Hoyt Thompson.
