Freeda Thompson

1926 - 2026

Freeda Morris Thompson was born on September 5, 1926, in Breathitt County, Kentucky, to Jerry and Anna Riley Morris; she was the 10th of 12 children. She passed away in Lexington on March 16, 2026. She was the wife of the late Earl D. Thompson and is survived by their four children: Wayne (Judy), Bob (Deb), Karen, and Larry (Tina). She was "Mamaw" to nine wonderful grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Her life was marked by faithfulness and longevity. She not only lived to age 99 ½ but resided in the same house on Zandale Drive in Lexington since she and her husband bought it new in 1958. After the passing of her beloved Earl in 1998, she courageously lived there independently for nearly 30 years right up to the end of her enduring life. For more than 50 years, she was an amazing wife to her equally steadfast Earl, who was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran and retired from civil service with the Lexington-Blue Grass Army Depot.

She was the oldest and longest standing member of her church, Ashland Avenue Baptist Church, Lexington, faithfully attending for more than 70 years. Her love for her Lord Jesus Christ was evident to all who knew her.

She bowled in a weekly bowling league at Southland Lanes continuously for 64 years and participated in a Bunko group for more than 40 years. Many knew her as an expert seamstress who for six decades worked from home for dozens of customers, including prominent Lexingtonians, such as Kentucky basketball coach Adolph Rupp, for whom she made alterations to his famous brown suits.

She was also known for hosting elaborate and joyful family celebrations at her home for birthdays, family dinners, and holidays. She truly made every event and every person feel extra special.

Her family, her church, and her community will feel the loss of this remarkable woman who touched so many lives. But our loss is her gain, as she is now present in her eternal home with her glorious Savior.

A 10:00 a.m. service will take place Saturday, March 21, at Ashland Ave Baptist Church, 483 W Reynolds Rd., Lexington, KY 40503. Burial will follow at The Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:30-8:00 p.m., Friday, at the church.
