Elizabeth Hall Reid

Elizabeth Hall Reid Elizabeth Hall Reid, 96, of Fort Worth, Texas, known to her family and friends as "Jimmie," was born July 8, 1922, in Kansas City. She died September 14, at home. A private, family service was held. The eldest daughter of Hallmark Cards founder, Joyce C. Hall, and Elizabeth Dilday Hall, Jimmie grew up on the Hall farm outside Kansas City, MO. She retained a love for the rural lifestyle throughout her life. Jimmie graduated from Sunset Hill School (Kansas City), Bradford College (Bradford, MA) and with a double major in Art and Home Economics from University of Kansas. Jimmie moved to Texas in 1953 with her first husband, Dr. Richard C. Schaffer, Sr. They lived at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, and later moved to Azle, TX, outside Fort Worth. Years later, Jimmie moved to Denton, TX, and purchased land where she and her second husband ran an All-Jersey dairy farm with stock from her father's herd. She had a life-long love of her adopted home state of Texas. Jimmie's passion was education. She maintained this interest by serving on the boards of Bradford College (MA) and The Selwyn School in Denton (TX). She also purposefully encouraged her five children throughout their education and actively supported their interests: 4-H, horse clubs, gardening, sports, and art. She cleverly included these interests in many of their household and farming responsibilities. Jimmie took her children on trips around the country as well as places around the world. She was a voracious reader, a member of the Embroiderer's Guild and, for a time, co-owned a needlework shop. In addition to educational organizations, she supported Rocky Mountain National Park, Botanical Research Institute of Texas, Happy Hill Farm/Academy, and the charitable interests of her children. Jimmie is survived by her brother, Donald J. Hall, and sister, Barbara L. Marshall, both of Kansas City; five grateful, adoring children: Richard C. Schaffer, Jr. (Betsy) of Ft. Worth, TX; Kenneth B. Schaffer (Roswitha) of Kansas City, MO; Joyce F. Fleming (Mark) of Cedar Rapids, IA; Nan E. Schaffer (Karen Dixon) of Washington D.C.; and Hershel W. Reid (Shannon) of Pilot Point, TX; eleven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and good friends. For honors and remembrances, the family suggests contributing, in Jimmie's name, to a charity or cause important to you.
