Eugene Zachman Obituary

Eugene Proud Zachman Eugene Proud Zachman, 86, Prairie Village, KS formerly Mission Hills, KS, Palm Springs, CA and Naples, FL, passed away May 7, 2019. Services were held Monday, May 13 at the Country Club Christian Church. Tax deductible memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Lake Yacht Club Sailing Foundation, P.O. Box 624, Granby, CO 80446. Lovingly known by many as "Big Z", Eugene was a graduate of Pembroke Country Day Preparatory School for Boys ('50) and the University of Missouri, Columbia ('54). Between semesters his senior year, he was married to the love of his life and "very best friend", Charlotte. They were joined by four children. Shortly after college he reported to Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base as a Lieutenant. After his tour of duty he entered into the insurance field as President/CEO of several national insurance companies until his retirement in 1991. During that time Gene also owned several other businesses and a registered Hereford ranch. After retirement, he was very involved in several 501(c)3 organizations in addition to the YMCA of the Rockies where he had been on the Board for 38 years. Among those were the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre, the Greater Grand Lake Shoreline Association and he founded the Grand Lake Yacht Club Sailing Foundation. Grandpa Z was an exceptionally generous man and as ornery as they come. He took life seriously, but was always willing to laugh about it later. His love for Charlotte was unparalleled. He was preceded in death by his doting wife, Charlotte Jones Zachman and is survived by his children Eugene Ralph Zachman, Ann Zachman Wilbur, James Alan Zachman, Janet Zachman Turney and nine grandchildren.

I met Gene not long after he retired and as I was preparing to retire. Those who know him will appreciate that he took be on as his "project" to teach me how to "retire". He suggested that I take a more active role in our Grand Lake homeowners association and recommended to the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre Board that I lead a facilities planning committee of which he was a part. Then, as he had "his attorney" on the team, we did a corporate review, and worked with his Kansas City tax attorney to clean up things (as he liked to put it). That led to my being chair of a building committee to plan and build a
$6.5 million state of the art theater facility.

In the last few years I have valued his friendship and have missed his presence. We have visited when I was in Kansas City or when he was in Grand Lake, and have talked by telephone. He lives on through the youth and disabled sailing program in Grand Lake and the joy people experience each summer at RMRT.

His children can be proud of the legacy Gene and Charlotte have left behind. God bless you all. Their spirits must rest high above Grand Lake.

Mr. Zachman was a kind and thoughtful man that will be missed. He wasn't the sort of man that judged you by how much money you had in your wallet, or what kind of car you drove, or what neighborhood you came from. He would listen and hold a sincere conversation with you. I hadn't seen you for a few years but I always said a Happy Birthday to you on our birthday. You were always 30 years ahead of me. Your family will miss you. The communities you lived in will miss you. Rest in Peace Mr. Zachman.
