First, please forgive me for not sending this message sooner. I just today learned of Gerry Bock's passing.
Gerry Bock was one of the finest individuals I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. As was the case with Wil Rogers, to Gerry, "A stranger was only a friend he ain't met yet!" In approximately 1970, I was one of those "strangers," and I needed a haircut. Fortunately, a friend recommended that I go to Bock's Barber Shop, where I first met Gerry. Besides being an excellent barber, Gerry was a kind, caring, and compassionate person. When I shared with Gerry that our oldest son had a very serious medical condition, Gerry wanted to know more about it. I explained that my wife and I had taken our son to several "specialists," and no one had been able to help. Gerry immediately put us in touch with a urologist who just happened to be one of his customers. And, to cut to the chase, after long and complicated surgery, our son was completely healed. Praise the Lord! And thanks so much to Gerry Bock. My family and I wish Rita and their wonderful family the very best. May God continue to bless you.

I apologize for not being aware of Gerry's passing. I have been a customer of his for many many years starting when I moved to the Kansas side of the line in about 1985 and went to his 75th and Metcalf location.
Gerry was a compassionate man and had many words of encouragement and faith when I lost my son in 2004. I am sorry I wasn't able to say goodbye and thank him. My deepest condolences.
April 25, 2011
Gerry "groomed" both my mother and father for several years, and was in fact, their friend and psychologist, as well as advisor. I have the fondest memories of how Gerry always had time for his customers, his friends. 75ht and Metcalf was close by, and Gerry always available. What a wonderful man!

What a lot of great memories I have of Gerry. From basketball (and all sports) to him teaching me how to cut hair, he was good at everything he did, and I was very proud to know him. I know he will be up there in heaven continuing to counsel and guide all of us. Charlie O'Reilly

My brother Gerald was the lone volunteer to play Pick-UP-Sticks with me one time when I got them for Christmas as a 5 or something year old. Even though he was a fierce competitor, I'm pretty sure he let me win. He acted like he really enjoyed playing with me.
Another vivid memory is when he came home from the Navy and turned on the light on the back porch where I was sleeping in the middle of the night to see how much I'd grown and changed while he was away.
He sent us a huge box of gifts at Christmas from Hawaii (while in the Navy) with all kinds of things we thought were wonderful like back-scratchers, embroidered slippers and such. These were just a couple of memories from childhood.
He was a light that shone in my life and will continue to lead me by his great example of fun and love.
He was the very best!

Gerry was a dear and wonderful friend. He first cut my hair in 1963 when the shop was at Gregory and Main. I had to walk from 75th and Main to his shop. He also cut my Dad Ed and my son Mike's hair. We had Royals tickets in 1981 but the teams went on strike (so much for that adventure). But every spring I would get a special "baseball cut". When we finished visiting about the season to come, you could see the seams in my skull. When I had heart surgery in '86, he was right there at the house to cut my hair (what a guy). Seeing him and visiting about the families, the unborn, the derby and baseball always made my day and put a bounce in my step. My dear friend will be greatly missed by all. Our love and prayers for Gerry and the entire Bock family. Bill, Marge, Mike, Katie and Ed Roche

Gerry has cut my husband's hair for 46 years, starting in the OP location at 75th and Metcalf. He gave both our boys their first haircuts (second one on my lap!!) and continued to cut their hair for 40 years. I went with my husband when we were first married and took the boys so got to know and love Gerry. He was one in a million!! Over the years I would go with Phil every once in a while to catch up with Gerry!! We LOVED the service yesterday. It was an amazing tribute to a great Christian man!! We LOVED Paula's poem. You should publish that. I am a nurse and have worked in hospice and your words rang true for EVERYONE who's lost a parent. What WONDERFUL kids Gerry and Rita have raised. He talked about you ALL all the time and his grand kids. We feel like we know you. We also LOVED Ron's Homily. It was AMAZING and SO "on"!! Excellent job!! Thank you, for being such an incredible family to an in credible man!! We send our love and prayers, Judy, Phil, Keil and Phil II Hileman, De Soto, KS.

Bock Family,
Gerry cut my hair for over 35 years - he saw it come and go. I will always treasure the memory of going with my Dad on Saturday mornings at 75th St. or on my own to Corporate Woods. He was a great man and will be truly missed.

Rita, Steve, Paula, Danny & Brian,
I have many great memories of Gerry; riding in his '68 Chevy Impala to Holy Trinity, talking baseball, listening to his corny jokes and being suckered into painting his pontoon boat :) What a smooth salesman!
He remains a strong role model for me even though I haven't lived in KC for over 30 years. I'll never forget his gentle nature, compassion and selfless attitude. We're all better for having known him.
Sorry I can't be there for the services. But you're all in my prayers. Please accept the condolences of me and my family.

What a Wonderfull man , I had the good fortune to know Gerry and family since 1971 , Gerry was a good "Priest " in the chair , giving great advice and a occasional pick when the dogs were running.
What a great guy , there are not many like him , he will be missed.

To a dear man I knew since my first haircut, thank you for the great years, and advice I received. I will raise a glass of Bailey's and toast you to the "Brotherhood"
If it was you standing on your barber chair, quoting the movie "Rudy" or watching "Plane, Trains, and Automobiles" I will always remember you when watching these classics!!!

Gerry will forever be in hearts. He was not just our barber but our friend. When our son Dylan was diagnosed with cancer Gerry came to our house to cut his remaining hair once the chemo has caused most of his hair to fall out. He was always interested in his well being and ours. There are not a lot of guys like Gerry out there and we are greatful to have had him in our lives. Our prayers and thoughts are with his famliy. Go Royals!!

Dear Bock Family,
Gerry was a unique individual. One that we all wish we could be more like. One that I’m sure God was very proud of. You don’t find people like Gerry much anymore. I only knew Gerry as my barber, but I always considered him my friend. Gerry has cut my hair for over 20 years and each of my 4 children got their first haircuts from Gerry. He has always been a part of our life as a family for as long as our kids can remember. He will be sorely missed.
But the greatest thing I will always remember about Gerry is the way he made you feel when you came into the shop. When I was in that chair, I felt as if I was the most important person in the world. His attention was always directed toward me, my life, and my family’s life. It was never about him or his struggles. If fact, it took quite an effort to get him to talk about some things that he might be struggling with. Gerry was always full of joy and laughter. He always had a story to tell. Because of Gerry, I would always leave the barber shop in a better mood, and hopefully a better person, than when I came in.
To me, Gerry was a God-send to those he came into contact with. My prayer is that I can become half the man that Gerry exemplified in his life.
God Bless you Gerry for being a part of my life and showing me what true servant hood and friendship is all about.
Our prayers go out to all of the family.

Bock Family,
Gerry cut my hair for over 30 years and I have to say I looked forward to every appointment.I always respected his wonderful Faith and daily mass attendance ,his playful complaints about Rita's card playing,Bernie's amorous adventures, his Monday fishing excursions, and his various coaching experiences and finally his Kentucky Derby trips I know he will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and it was a privilege.
Sincerely,

Rita and family,
I was shocked and saddened to hear about Gerrys passing. I'd had him for my barber for over 40 years and I looked forward to every visit. We'd talk about movies or family and he was so much a gentleman and always asked about my wife and kids, always remembering their names(I was amazed, what a memeory)without fail. I'll never forget on the day I got married in 1978 he gave me as well as two groomsmen a shave and also offered to let me take his car to get out of town if I'd changed my mind! I will miss him more than my barber, but my friend. I guess God needed a good haircut and who else would he call!
I'm very sorry for your loss.

I first met Gerry Labor Day Weekend 1969 at a retreat. We became instant friends. 2 Weeks later he was helping my wife Jan and me move from Topeka Ks on his day off. Jan and Rita became friends and we started playing cards (hearts I mean cut throat hearts). It would be 2 in the morning and all of the sudden we would say this is crazy and the next night we would be back at it again. Fun crazy times. Gerry would call and say lets go to a movie and I would pop popcorn put on my winter coat hide the beer and popcorn and (Gerry Ebert and Ken Roper would go to the movies) It was so neat to have someone that loved movies as much as I did. Remember we both had 4 kids and were on a budget. I am so glad I got to see my friend last Thanksgiving when I was in OP. Gerry was a true gem and now he is sparkling in heaven. God bless him.

Rita, Steve, Paula, Danny and Brian: I was so saddened to get the call on Monday and to see each of you at the hospital. My love for your family has always been there and continues. Gerry was there for me and Chris when we needed help caring for my dad (Maurice) while we were trying to hold down our jobs plus our own families at our homes. He volunteered to stay with Maurice overnight and offered Subway sandwiches for meals when baked goods couldn't get into his home. He was my dad's buddy many times and I think the snoring in the recliner and couches at my dad's house brought peace to them both!!!!!!! Gerry was a gentle spirit and one that God allowed us to love and we felt his love for many. What an awesome example Gerry is to many of us. I was so lucky to have him as an Uncle. I remember many times when my dad would take Chris and I over to Uncle Gerry's house and we would play for hours and hours on end and never get enough when we were little. I truly love you guys and miss him so much already. My deepest sympathy to all of you and your families. Love, Janet Bock Pennington

In 1984, I met him as Brian's dad. For the next 26 years, he was my friend. I will always have fond memories of my times at the shop(s). He always told me that I "got a little better lookin'" everytime I left the shop. Brian, GerBo now knows the truth about the infamous "Bucket Night". He knows that we were telling the truth the whole time!!!

Rita and family, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Gerry was my husband, Ed's, barber who came to our home to cut Ed's hair when, because of his illness, he was having a hard time getting to Gerry's shop. Gerry did so much of the same for so many people. He lived a wonderful life and is in my prayers,

In the fall of 1972, my deal with Gerry, after he'd ushered & I'd served Mass for Father Quigley, was that he'd cut my hair for ME, not what Mom thought it should be. My first choice as an individual, I think. This became a lifelong friendship, but a terrible loss on Monday. Visit after visit, his velvet, dark voice that I came to yearn to listen to- whatever the advice was. I remember turning to find him walking through the door on my 30th birthday, the time he, Francis, Danny & he got me through the "re-location" of my Dad. That girlfriends could find me at the barbershop when no-one else knew where to look (before cellphones). When the loss of my brother Brian, was his loss as well. The barbershop became a place where: being a fellow Catholic meant so much, when friendship didn't need to be defined, and where challenges in life weren't quite as hard as they seemed BEFORE you walked in the door. Where baseball had religious significance. Where my life was kept on track & values echoed in my head long after the door shut, and darkness fell, even the temperature did not matter.

I am so sad to hear about Gerry. He was my barber, but I thought of him as a friend. I am deeply saddened. Gerry had become my friend over just the past few years, simply by virtue of sitting in his barber chair. We shared our joint interest in K-State sports and our deep love of Catholicism. He was particularly interested in my membership in the Latin Mass community, and I know he intended to visit our Mass sometime. Gerry was one of those rare guys who you felt that you'd known all your life. I will miss him greatly. This was a great man.

I was stunned an saddened at the news of Jerry's death. Jerry had cut my hair, (before I lost it all) since Jim's retirement. He was also the barber to several mutual friends and as a group we agreed that going to see Jerry was the next thing to going to Mass. He will be missed.

Dear Bock Family,
Our hearts are saddened and we are shocked. But, we have many memories to hold close to our hearts. Jerry cut my hair for the last 30 yrs. We have visited so many times. He always shared his latest news about his kids and grandkids. We talked fishing constantly as this was a passion for both of us. Our daughter works with Kathleen at Olathe North (Taylar Rabel-English Dept.) Gerry thought that was pretty neat. He always asked about my kids as well as my wife and how we were all doing. My wife used to tease Gerry about charging me too much for my haircuts, since I am balding (have very little hair) and Gerry had to find it. Seriously though Gerry was a great barber as well as my friend for 30 years. He will be greatly missed. It won't be the same to sit in another chair for quite some time. We are praying for your family in this time of need.
With Heartfelt Sympathy...
