Gladys Lee Obituary

Gladys H. Lee, 79, Excelsior Springs, MO, passed away Monday, November 25, 2002, at the Excelsior Springs Medical Center after an extended illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, November 30, at the First United Methodist Church, Excelsior Springs, MO. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Excelsior Springs. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to the church. Gladys was born November 23, 1923 in Blackburn, MO, the daughter of Louis C. and Edna (Mevius) Heins. She was married to J.B. Lee on May 23, 1948 in Blackburn, MO. He preceded her in death on November 30, 1988. Gladys served in WWII in the US Army Nurse Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant. When the war ended, she worked as a nurse and an administrator at Research Hospital, The Veterans Hospitals in Excelsior Springs, MO, Kansas City, MO, Leavenworth, KS, The Excelsior Springs Institute, and finally at Shirkey Leisure Acres Nursing Home where she became known as "General Lee" by her staff. Gladys was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Excelsior Springs, MO and various Civic Organizations in the Excelsior Springs Community, including the American Legion Women's Auxiliary, Lioness and the Elk's Lodge. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Lee of Overland Park, KS and Tamara Ann Lee of Olathe, KS; two sisters, Frances Cook of Blackburn, MO and Mardelle Marten of Richmond, MO; grandsons, Trey Rutledge and Colin Dale; granddaughters, Brooke Rutledge, Whitney Rutledge, Sarah Dale and Aubrey "Meggie" Rutledge.
