My brother, Dick Gilbert, and Henry were friends from junior high until Dick's death after graduating from college in 1981. Henry was my favorite of all of Dick's friends. Though I have had almost no contact with any of his friends since then, my memories of Henry remain clear. Larger than life (literally, especially being 4 years younger!), always kind, always helpful, always courteous to my mother. Henry seemed ever-present in our home, from Friday night football games (Dick was a yell leader), weekends and summers hanging out, and trips together back-and-forth to Iowa (Dick went to Grinnell College). In reading his obituary, it seems his adolescent and teenage years foreshadowed the man he would become, an embodiment of the BSA creed. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

I’ve known Henry since High school and kept in touch as young parents by having a few play dates with our kids when they were all very little. Though I had not seen him in almost 25 years, he made the effort to come to both of my parents funerals. My folks always opened their hearts to Henry when he would drop by to talk during his younger days. Henry was a big presence! You couldn’t miss him in the hallways of SMEast!! But, I believe, he had a very tender and warm heart! He loved his kids and family and I’m sorry that I didn’t keep in touch with him. My high school friends are shocked at his passing. Too young to be gone, it’s just so sad. A piece of my heart is broken. May he Rest In Peace. My condolences to all of his family.
