HERBERT FRANKLIN MEEKS

Herbert Franklin Meeks was born June 13, 1931, in Anderson, South Carolina. He was raised by Samual McGowan Meeks and Ethel Tula Meeks. He passed from this life on April 23, 2014, at Pleasant Hill Rehabilitation Center after battling a long illness. He shared his life with his wife of 63 years, Virginia Bowers Meeks of Lee's Summit, Mo. Herbert graduated from Boys High School in Anderson in May of 1950, after which he joined the United States Navy, serving on the USS Bennington during the Korean Conflict. He was originally stationed at Olathe Naval Air Station, where he met his future wife, Virginia Bowers. They were married on March 28, 1952, were then transferred to the Brooklyn Naval Air Station, where they had their first child, Teresa Ann Meeks (now House). Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1953, Herbert and his young family settled in Lee's Summit, where he started his 38 year career at the Bendix Department of Defense Facility (now Honeywell). During this period of time, Herbert and Virginia had twin sons, Herbert Lorn and Henry Lee, and another daughter, Vickie Lynne (now Haney). They spent the years up to 2010 as active youth group sponsors and regular members of the First Christian Church of Lee's Summit, and Herbert spent many of his summers coaching baseball, his real true love. Herbert is survived by his wife, Virginia Bowers Meeks, their daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Steven House and Teresa House and their two children, son-in-law Eric and Jennifer House Packard and their two children in North Kansas City and Christopher and Samantha Kroenke House of Overland Park, Kan.; son, Herbert and Valerie Palmer Meeks and their daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Thomas and Kristen Meeks Wright of San Antonio, Texas; son, Henry and Conjetta DeCarlo Meeks and Jerrilee Meeks and their three children and 10 grandchildren, and son-in-law Tony Haney and Vickie Meeks Haney of Pendergrass, Ga. A visitation will be held for Herbert at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 26, at Langsford Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. Burial at Lee's Summit Cemetery.
