James Hugh McLarney, 77, passed away on July 8, 2011, from melanoma. A visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2011, at Visitation Church, 5141 Main Street, Kansas City, MO, followed by a memorial mass at 11 a.m. Jim was born October 8, 1933, on a farm near Hemple, Mo. He graduated from Gower High School in 1951. He graduated from the University of Missouri with a B.S. in Agricultural Economics in 1955. After serving in the Air Force in Okinawa, he earned his law degree from MU in 1962. Jim practiced law at Swanson Midgley until 2009, where he served as a managing partner for 15 years. He was a highly respected attorney in a variety of areas. One of Jim's many victories included a landmark case where he defended the National Collegiate Athletic Association before the United States Supreme Court. Jim was a member of the MO Bar, KC Bar Assoc., the Lawyer Assoc. of KC, the Estate Planning Assoc., the Rotary Club, the Alpha Gamma Sigma Fraternity, the Carriage Club and Visitation Church. He was also an American Royal Governor and a member of the MO 4-H Foundation, where he served as President. Jim was preceded in death by his father, Charles; mother, Owatonna; and brother, Gerald. He was a devoted husband, loving father, dedicated grandfather and caring sibling. He leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Sandra Ryan McLarney; his three daughters and their spouses: Elizabeth McLarney and Gordon Little, Julie McLarney and Pete Winkelbauer, Suzanne McLarney and Jeff Teeven; along with six grandchildren: Jamie, Ryan, Connor, Parker, Caleb and Riley; two sisters, Mary Jo (Greg) Hallett and Sister Rose McLarney, C.S.J.; and two brothers, Dan and Patrick (Marti) McLarney. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the Missouri 4-H Foundation, 819 Clark Hall, Columbia, MO 65211, Sisters of St. Joseph, 6400 Minnesota Ave., St. Louis, MO 63111, Visitation Church, or a charity of your choice.

Memories of Mr. McLarney and his family are fond. He was a delight to be around and was one of the adventurous few people who ate my cactus dish. He is missed.
