Jerry Byers Obituary

Jerry Ray Byers, of Raytown, Missouri, passed away on March 21, 2008. He was born on April 13, 1948, in Leeds, Ala., to Clara Mae Batton and Owen Ray Byers. He spent his childhood in Leeds and Birmingham, Ala., cheering on the Tide. Jerry worked hard in the restaurant industry for most of his life. He first went to work with Taco Bell back when they were just starting out and opened stores along the West Coast. He then went to work for Ponderosa, where he remained for over 25 years. He worked in different capacities during those years - both on the company and the franchise sides. He got to live in many different states during his tenure with Ponderosa: Louisiana, Colorado, Michigan, Utah, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Ohio and enjoyed many adventures along the way. Jerry loved the people and the challenge of restaurant work but decided it was time for a change and became a collector with NCO in Lenexa, Kan., where he has been employed for the past six years. Jerry is preceded in death by his mother, Clara Mae, his father, Owen Ray, his grandparents Albert and Alice Scott and Louis and Daisy Hill. Jerry is survived by his wife, Rebecca, his stepmother Helen Byers of Kalamazoo, Mich., his sons Jerry Byers of Raytown Mo., Troy and Danielle Byers of Wilkes-barre Pa., and Gary and Jackie Byers of Mechanicsburg, Pa. He is survived by his grandchildren: Dustin and Jordan Byers of Raytown, Mo., and Tristan, Mackenzie and Kyndall Byers of Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Robert, Donald, Ronald, Terry, Louis, Norma, Janice, Martha and Maria. He is survived by his in-law family: Sandy, Ann, Karen and Chris. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends as well. Visitation will be at Heartland Funeral Home, 6113 Blue Ridge Blvd., Building 2, Raytown, Mo., on Tuesday, March 25, from 6-7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at First Baptist Church of Raytown on Wednesday, March 26, at 10 a.m. Please make memorial contributions in Jerry's honor to Kansas City Hospice. Jerry was a gentle man who could strike up a conversation with anybody and become fast friends with everybody. He loved sports and was a walking encyclopedia of sports trivia. He could tell you every single winner of the Heisman trophy award- what year they won, what college they attended and what position they played. His passion was football and he was a die-hard Alabama Crimson Tide and Denver Bronco fan. Jerry's family and friends will miss him dearly but are better for having shared this earth with him. Becky, ... I just wanted to let you know that I miss Jerry very much. I admire the way you are bravely walking through life.

I think know you well enough to also say that you are still greiving and the strong emotions of Jerry's passing still flow through you every day. But remember "This too will pass", ... and that's okay to let this happen without regrets or guilt.

Continue to show others how it's done when "Facing Life on Life's terms". One chapter may have closed in certain aspects of your life, ... but a brand new chapter for you has begun. Embrace it!

Rest assured that Jerry will always be with you on this journey and he would want nothing but the best for you, ... as God does.

Love you my good friend, ... Mark

Becky, Jerry was a one of a kind man. He always had a kind word and smile for everyone. I will truly miss our Wednesday late night "hang man" games (oops, we were supposed to be collecting) and I have kept all of the original "Jerry Byer" poems that he has even written to me. I am sure that as we are sitting here, he is up in Heaven teaching poetry to everyone. You are in my prayers and thoughts.

Dearest Becky,
You both are shining examples of what Love, Friendship and Courage are. I was lucky enough at one time to have had a brief glimps into it and was forever inspired that such love exsisted and was achievable. I pray you will take comfort to know that it will transend our mortality. You get to take it with you. It has been released into the world now and can be tapped in by all. It will forever live on to continue to touch and inspire for all time to come. You both have created an everlasting spirit of love that death itself can't stop! May peace and acceptance find you soon. Please feel free to contact me anytime! Love You! Julie Crable

Becky and Family,

David and I were so sad to hear about Jerry and his passing. Jerry had such a wonderful soul and peace about him. Fun to be around and so easy going. He loved you so much, and it was obvious you all had that love not many experience.

Know that he is with the Lord and rejoycing now. He is with family and friends he has missed.

It is a difficult time for you and I hope you lean on the Lord for support and guidance..he is there for you.

God has lifted Jerry's spirit and pain to the Heavens above.

God Bless.

Love Always, Kendra and David Morton

Becky, I am sorry about your loss. In the short time that I have known you both you have always been good friends. We have some really great times together and today we have a sad day. I do believe, as I hope you do, that he is now in a better place and once the grieving is over should celebrate his life. This is hard for me to write because really there is nothing that can be said. if you do need anything feel free to let me know.

Becky,
I want to express my deepest sympathy to you and your extended family at this time. I will always remember the spirit, dignity, and grace with which you and Jerry have carried yourselves. You both will always be an inspiration to us that have had the honor and priviledge to know you. I am confident that you will carry on in that spirit and it will live; and be passed; on through those around you. God bless you. If there is ever anything that Bobbi and I can do for you, know that we will always be available.

Becky,
I want you to know that you are in my heart and mind. I could not think of the right things to say during your time of sorrow. I thought of a poem to express my feelings of sadness. Remember all of us love you and we will always be here for you not just for today but for all the days to follow.

His Journey's Just Begun

Don't think of him as gone away
his journey's just begun,
life holds so many facets
this earth is only one.

Just think of him as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.

Think how he must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.

And think of him as living
in the hearts of those he touched...
for nothing loved is ever lost
and he was loved so much.

We love you Becky and Jerry.

Love Always,

Shari

Becky, ... There are no words that I can say or write to make this time any less diifficult for you, ... so I won't even attempt to do so.

What I will say is that I could not have ever imagined having two better friends in my life as you and Jerry have been to me. I have to also say that it was so obvious to all that knew the two of you, ... that neither a man nor a woman in this world have ever had the privledge of sharing a more loving relationship than the one you and Jerry had.

The wonderful thing about "True Love" is that it is something that can not be conquered, ... not even by the physical death that we all will one day face.

Jerry's Love will always remain in our daily lives, and continue to reside in our hearts and minds forever.

With much love, respect and deepest sympathy, .... Mark
