JOHN JOHNSTON Obituary

JOHN W. JOHNSTON John Wesley Johnston, 90, of Lenexa, KS went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 17, 2017, after losing his battle with cancer. He was a devout Christian who wouldn't compromise his beliefs. John was born April 11, 1927, to Bertha (Snyder) and John C. Johnston in Ft. Scott, KS. He graduated from Ft. Scott High School and boarded a train to join the Army serving his country as a medic at the end of WWII. John graduated from Kansas State Teachers College (Pittsburg). John was always the teacher giving guidance and everyone has experienced a "Larry lecture". He enjoyed reading his bible, Royals baseball, Jayhawks basketball and NASCAR. John was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Joyce, in 2012; daughter, Vicki; brothers, Paul, Enoch, Harry and "sis" Sara. He is survived by five sons, John Jr. (Teresa), Jay (Margo), Jerry (Christie), Jeffrey and Joel (Marius), 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, nephew and nieces (his cherished Tammy and Shirley) and many faith friends. The family would like to thank the selflessness bestowed by the caregivers who came to his apartment each day for the past seven months to feed, comfort, pray and fellowship with him and Kansas City Hospice. John's memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 23, at Lenexa Baptist Church in Lenexa, KS. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lenexa Baptist Church Ministries.

My theological mentor, and my friend JW. You guided me through my ministry with a broad perspective in your "life, Leadership with Balance" classes at First Family. You were with me during my father´s last day of life. You prayed for him in his coma state as tears rowed down from his eyes, and yours. I informed you of receiving my theological degree during church services, you immediately sent word to Pastor Jerry. And liken to a proud father, you escorted me to the pulpit with Jerry while both of you laid hands on me and ordained me as a minister of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. And while I was building water projects and ministering to the villagers in Uganda, your sweet words were guiding me. Your spirit will always be in my heart, and I will never forget how you didn´t see me as an African American but simply a child of God. Love you JW and until we meet again on that other side of the Jordon River!

JW (as we referred to him) was one of the most caring and intelligent person I have known. I loved having him as a friend and Sunday School teacher. We had a special bond because my late husband's name of HW Johnston and your mother died on the same day as my birthday--December 17th. The two years that we went to "Love in the Afternoon", a musical program were wonderful. He loved all of you and was so proud of you and told our class about your wonderful exploits. We all felt part of your family. Most of all he loved the Lord and told us that he had read the Bible more that 60 times. I feel very blessed to have had such a friend.

J.W. was a man I always looked up to. I met him while attending First Family Church. The circle he directed was the highlight of attending there. He and Joyce were such a neat couple. I visited her while she was in the nursing home and visited J.W. several times while he lived at his apartment. He and I talking on the phone fairly often . I will miss him. I know where he is. He got to see JESUS before me. See you later J.W.
