JOHN YATES Obituary

Loving father and grandfather John Lee Yates, 86, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at his home in Overland Park. Memorial services will be 4 p.m., Sunday, at the Amos Family Funeral Home & Crematory with visitation preceding the service at 3 p.m. John was born Nov. 26, 1927, in St. Louis, Mo., to Clarence Yates and Marie Middleton and was the oldest of three brothers. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended Washington University, both in St. Louis. John had a distinguished career in broadcasting that spanned nearly three decades. He began working in radio in St. Louis while still in high school and went on to write, produce and announce radio programs for the military where he held the rank of Staff Sargent during the Korean War. John began in television at KQTV Channel 2 in St. Joseph, Mo., but is best known for his longstanding role as weather anchor for KCTV Channel 5 from 1958 to 1981. John had a sharp scientific mind with a special interest in meteorology, astronomy and physics, and was a longtime audiophile who shared his enthusiasm and love of music with family and friends. He is survived by children Jan L. Soptic and Jill M. Bagby; son-in-law Michael J. Soptic; and by grandchildren Joe and Jeff Soptic and Sam Bagby. John's family is grateful to the staffs of Cypress Springs and Vitas Hospice for their care and compassion. Jan and Jill You probably do not remember me but I was a good friend of your mother and father and worked at the fitness center with him. He was a very special man and well loved.

To the family of Johnny Yates I send my deep sympathys, you don't know me nor do I you but I must share a short story with you .Every since I was 5 yrs old Johnny Yates the weatherman has been my invisible boyfriend ,I guess I carried him to every meal we ate ,and he must've only been 5 inches tall according to my small little hands, my sisters have given me years of fulfilled grief over this ,so I was so saddened to hear of his passing ,so just to let you know your families loved one has been kinda in our family in a most fun filled way for many years ....I am 55 yrs old now and just want to say thanks for the last 50 years Johnny Yates .....and my sincere condolences to your family

I placed this link on my Facebook, saying "For those of us with a little patina, our Weatherman was JOHNNY YATES". I remember him OH, SO WELL and have missed his sincere delivery of the sometimes troublesome weather in Kansas City with his calm, grace that I dearly miss, today.
To his family, THANK YOU, SO MUCH
for sharing him with all of us, in our living rooms each evening and night... He was a Welcomed Guest at my house.
