Karen Cunningham Obituary

CUNNINGHAM Karen Rose (Kirgif) Cunningham, born on July 31, 1954, in Kansas City, Missouri, Karen attended St. Gabriel's grade school and Winnentonka and Oak Park High Schools in Kansas City. Karen graduated from the Univ. of Missouri in 1976 with B.A. in Child and Family Development. After employment as a social worker, Karen joined Gilbert Robinson Corp. as Director of Training, opening restaurants across the country. She moved to San Francisco in 1985 and managed apartment communities for Trinity Properties of San Francisco before marrying Marc Cunningham in 1989 aboard the California San Francisco Spirit yacht in San Francisco Bay. She was a wonderful and proud mother to Alexander and Oliver and made everything easy for her family, residing in San Francisco's Sunnyside district since 1992. Karen leaves behind sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews in Tucson, Arizona and Ventnor City, New Jersey. She also leaves behind her mother and father in-law, brother and sisters in-law, nieces and nephews in Ashaway, Rhode Island, Pawcatuck and Cromwell, Connecticut. As a young mom, Karen operated the Bay Area Basket Company for several years before working in sales for Just Tomatoes. Touching many hearts of children, parents and staff, Karen was a para-professional for special needs kids at Commodore Sloat School in San Francisco through 2005. Karen was an active school mom at Lakeshore School, Cathedral School for Boys and St. Ignatius College Prep. Elegant, refined, vivacious, resilient, courageous, vibrant and polished, she was the consummate hostess that made you feel instantly welcome and at home. She was a big movie fan and a great storyteller with a hearty laugh. Karen was the sparkle in many people's lives. She loved living in San Francisco, wore orange shoes to Giants' games and was an outstanding chef, carrying herself with aplomb through numerous back surgeries. Funeral Services were held on December 28, 2006, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in San Francisco California. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to Commodore Sloat School, c/o KK Fund, SF, CA.

Many of Karen's friends from Missouri are still just finding out about your families loss. Friends from her old neighborhood, Oak Park and Winnitonka High Schools well remember Karen's bright smile and humor. The local KC paper had misspelled her maiden name when printed in December 06. Our sympathies to the Cunningham and Kirgis families.

Dear Marc. I was shocked and saddened by the news about Karen. It has been years since I knew her. We opened restaurants together for Gilbert/Robinson. A friend called and left a message and I found the obituary in the Kansas City Star.

In many ways, you might say Karen changed my life. When she hired me, I was a 30 something year old waiter. She saw potential in me, which drastically altered the course of my career.

We were really kids then, and now with a young daughter and three grand kids, I mourn for you and your family and have been touched by these words of others.

It doesn't surprise me how many people loved Karen. She lived love, and shined love, and was hope, embodied in a lady of grace and charm.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy.

We remember Karen as a young teenager when we moved to the "Cleveland Circle" in Kansas City in 1967. We watched her grow into a lovely young woman. These were special times for our families and our children growing up together. Our sympathies go out to all of you: Dan, Mary Kay, Ann Marie, and Thom. Marc, we are sorry we never met you or the boys, but Joanne and Tom were so proud of all of you and we heard such great stories about your family. We know that her death is a great loss to you. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. The last time we saw Karen was at Joanne's memorial service in Tucson. We were unable to attend Tom's service, but we had a wonderful visit with him in Tucson just a few weeks before his death.

My sincerest condolences to you and your family. I always remember
Karen wearing a big smile on her face, talking to me about how women feel good when wearing red, and when she, Fides, and I would take the kids over to McDonald's for a break from doing the postcards. She will always be missed with good memories.
