Leonard Thompson Obituary

Leonard "Larry" Thompson passed away quietly at St. Luke's Hospital on February 19, 2009. Larry was born March 20, 1921, in Waltham, MA, the son of George J. and Ruth Barnes Thompson. He grew up in Ithaca, NY, graduated from Westtown School, Westtown, PA, and from Williams College, where he was captain of the soccer team. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in WWII. On July 29, 1943, he married Margery Taylor of Philadelphia. After the war, Larry graduated from Cornell Law School. He worked for the Glens Falls Insurance Company in Glens Fall, NY, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and moved to Kansas City in 1961. After retirement, Larry and Marge spent summers in their beloved cabin in Minnesota. Larry was an active member and Sunday school teacher at Country Club Congregational Church for over 45 years. He was proud of his volunteer work with the KC Spurs Soccer Team, Meals on Wheels and the Rehabilitation Institute. Larry and Marge had three children. Their only son, Richard, died in Vietnam in November 1973 while serving as a Conscientious Objector. Larry is survived by his daughters Terrie Cornell (Bill) of El Paso, TX, and Susan Hawkins (Paul) of Overland Park; four grandchildren, Anne and Richard Cornell, Tom and Michael Hawkins, and two great grandchildren, Zoey Hawkins and Taylor Cornell-Nosaka. Our Dad and Gramps will be missed tremendously. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Country Club Congregational Church, 205 W. 65th St., Kansas City, MO 64113. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rehabilitation Institute, 3011 Baltimore, Kansas City, MO 64108.

Larry & Marge were our "cabin" neighbors for 15+ years in Minnesota. They were like another set of grandparents to our daughters. We are better people for having had them in our lives.

The Board and staff at the Rehabilitation Institute express sincere condolences to the Thompson family. Mr. Thompson was a wonderful friend of our organization. His leadership on our Board of Directors helped shape our organization into what it is today. He will be missed greatly.

Marge & family,
I worked with Larry way back when at National Dealer Services. Larry was such a kind soul and always fun to be around. With the loss recently of Janet, who I know was very fond of Larry, we've lost a couple of great ones. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I know everyone who knew Larry will miss him!!

Mr. Thompson was my sunday school when I was a teenager (mid/late 70's). He was a kind and caring man and knew how to relate to us at that age. After high school I always looked forward to seeing him on Sunday mornings on my visits to CCCC. I'd like to think that one can still see his influence on me even today. God bless you, Mr. Thompson.
