Marilyn McMullen Obituary

1932-2008 Marilyn Lacey McMullen, went to the Lord peacefully at home on October 19. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 22 at Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral, downtown, 13th and Broadway, Kansas City, MO. Reception in the Parrish Hall will follow the service, then burial at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Muncie Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS. All are welcome. Marilyn was the beloved daughter of Charles and Esther Lacey, and sister of Betty Jeanne Buroff, who predeceased her. She was a proud graduate of Webster High School, Webster Groves, MO. She attended Milliken College and the University of Missouri, Columbia, where she graduated in 1954 with a BS degree from the College of Education, and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She established scholarships at the School of Education in honor of her mother, whom she loved dearly and whose passion for education Marilyn lived out in her own life. Marilyn was also very close to her father, and proud of his distinguished service as a Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army under General Bradley in World War II. Marilyn taught second grade at LaDue Elementary School in St. Louis. She was a member of the Grace Bibb Society in support of the MU School of Education, and a member of the Friends of the MU Library and MU Kansas City Alumni Club. She was also a member and a past Director of the MU Jefferson Club. At Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral Marilyn had served in the choir and vestry. She was a long time member and Director of the Altar Guild at the Cathedral, where she was a member for over 40 years. Marilyn was a Cub Scout Den Mother and President of the Boy Scout Mother's Club. Both of her sons became Eagle Scouts, as well as her grandson, Matthew, just before her passing. She taught her boys to apply themselves; to help others; and to always show respect and kindness. Her son Andrew is now an Episcopal Priest in Naples, FL, and will preside at her funeral. Marilyn was devoted to St. Luke's Hospital. She volunteered in the Surgery Waiting Lounge for over 30 years; was President of the Hospital Auxiliary; a past member of the Hospital Board of Trustees and was currently a Director of the St. Luke's Foundation and a member of its executive committee. Marilyn also served on the Board of Bishop Spencer Place to whom she was very grateful for the wonderful care provided to her mother. At MU Marilyn met the love of her life and husband of 53 years, Larry, and devoted her life to her family and raising her two sons, Michael and Andrew. She is survived by her husband; nephew Mark Buroff and his wife Chris; her sons and their wives, Bonnie and Yvette, and grandchildren, Matthew, Hannah, Sarah, Rachel, Abby and Sophie. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to St. Luke's Hospital Foundation, 4225 Baltimore Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64111; Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral, 415 W. 13th Street, Kansas City, MO 64105; and the MU College of Education, 301 Reynolds Alumni Center, Columbia, MO 65211. The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at St. Luke's Hospital, and St. Luke's Hospice, for their loving care provided to Marilyn. Dear Larry,
How disappointed Betty and I were to learn of your loss of a loving wife for over 53 years and the mother of your sons of whom she was so proud. It had to be a tragic loss for all of you.
We're sorry that we were unable to be with you for the services. Over the weekend, Betty contracted a respiratory infection and although spending one night as a guest at Saint Luke's, she's far from recovered. Consequently, we were afraid to venture out to be with you in fear that she might have another long coughing spree. However, be assured, our thoughts and prayers are with you all and will continue to be with you as move forward in the days ahead. Our best regards,

My best regards to Mike, Andrew and Mr. Larry McMullen. She was a mother who cared most about her husband and family and was so proud of them. They all became the successes they are in part through her quiet support, I guess that is what mothers do. The many friends of the McMullen family offer their condolences.
