There are no words to express the pride and gratitude we have for your sacrifice Matt. We pray your children will find comfort in what you have done for them and all Americans so we can continue to enjoy the freedoms we so often take for granted.
To Matt's wife and parents, we can only imagine your devastation. Our son is in Afghanistan now and like so many other families, we anxiously wait for his safe return. We work so hard when they're children to keep them safe and out of harms way - if only we could have that ability throughout their lives...
We thank you for your sacrifice as well and wish we could offer some words of comfort to make this time easier for you. We pray God will give you the strength and courage to keep Matt's memory alive.

"All the rainbows have been broken, falling to the ground. All that's left is colored glass, scattered all around. What happens when all that's left of the rainbows are the pieces of colored glass scattered on the ground? Many time during the course of our lives we feel as if all the rainbows have been broken. We may be left standing in the rain to pick up the pieces of shattered glass and throw them away, or we can begin to put the pieces back together. It may take time, but then you'll find a new rainbow design."
Your pain is unimaginable. We try to make sense of it when tragedies happen and have to trust in our God and know that He is all good. You and your family have been in our thoughts and prayers every day. If only there was something we could do to ease the pain in your hearts. Never doubt that we are here for you any time, for any need. We miss you, we love you, and we pray that through this rain you find rainbows.
Love,
Rhonda & Kathy

Dave,
My condolences to you ,and your entire family in this tragic loss. As I sat listening to the many wonderful memories of friends, teammates, fraternity brothers, and fellow SEALS, I couldn't help myself from thinking of you and our days together at yellow. Regardless of what we were doing, you were always the one who was competing the hardest,a likely as not, the winner.
According to the book," Heaven is for real", there are huge Angels in Heaven, with very large wings, and very large swords, who are needed ,and used, by God to throw satan into the lake of fire. I'm sure Matt is in training at this moment learning how to use his sword given to him by God.

Mason family,
Can't describe the sorrow I feel for your son, husband, father. He sounded like a phenomenal individual, especially in his fight to recover after his 2004 injuries, and his brave return to service. As the spouse of a former Marine who deployed several times and a mother of two small boys, my heart goes out to you Jessica. Your strength as a career military wife is undergoing its greatest challenge and I think and pray for you everyday. God's arms are around you all.

As fellow Missourians, who live in the area Matthew was raised, we're saddened by the loss of a neighbor, a patriot. As grateful Americans, we share your pride and your sorrow for your beloved Matthew grew to be a hero to us all and we're so very thankful for his bravery in service as he stood between us and terror. He will forever be honored and never be forgotten. We pray you gather strength knowing the depth of support surrounding you.

I remember so many fun times with Matt. It breaks my heart to hear about what happened. He accomplished so much in a life that was cut far too short. My memories of us practicing batting in his backyard, playing little league baseball, going through 2-a-day football practices, and just being classmates will stay with me forever. Matt was an incredible man, a great friend, and hero to our world. I miss you, Matt.
August 17, 2011
Betty and David, I found this poem and thought of you.
Miss Me - But Let Me Go
When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom-filled room, Why cry for a soul set free.
Miss me a little - but not for long. And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the Love that we once shared.
Miss Me - But Let Me Go.
For this is a journey we all must take, and each must go alone.
It's all a part of the Master's plan, and a step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss Me - But Let Me Go
Matt will always be in your hearts. You just have to look into each other's eyes to see Matt every day. His smile and twinkling eyes are in Betty's. His strength and determination are in Dave's.
The love and pride you each feel in your hearts is the same love and pride that Matt had for you, Michael, Jess and the boys.
You should be very proud of how you took the hand of a little boy and made him into a wonderful man, who truly stood tall.
As you watch the boys grow, I know there will be many times that you will think to yourselves, "That's Matt." and smile.
See you soon.
With Love, Crawford

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to U.S. Navy Seal, CPO. Matthew D. Mason our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Matthew. And to Matthew it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Matthew, you are a brave Navy Seal, a Patriot Warrior and a true Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,307 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Matthew’s family and loved ones.
