Maxwell Berry Obituary

Maxwell G. Berry, M.D., died at home on August 18, 2004, at the age of 95. Dr. Berry was born April 5, 1909, in Greenwood County, KS, and graduated from the University of Kansas Medical School in 1933. He and Josephine Marshall were married in 1937. Dr. Berry is survived by Josephine and their four children, William and his wife, Caroline, Jane, John and his wife, Susan and Barbara and her husband, Mason Emerson, eight grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. Dr. Berry practiced internal medicine in the Kansas City area for over 50 years. In World War II, he served in the United States Army for four years, 21/2 years in the South Pacific as Lt. Colonel, internist, chief of medicine and consultant in tropical medicine. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal on the island of Leyte. A member of St. Luke's Hospital staff since 1938, he served as Medical Staff President and as a director of the hospital's board. Dr. Berry taught at the University of Kansas Medical School, retiring as Emeritus Clinical Professor. He was named the medical school's Distinguished Alumnus and awarded the Delp Medal for excellence in medicine. At the University of Missouri at Kansas City's medical school, Dr. Berry was Associate Provost and clinical professor. In 1998, the Maxwell Berry St. Luke's-UMKC Professorship in Internal Medicine was established in his honor. He was a founding member and later President of the American Society of Internal Medicine, Fellow of the American College of Physicians, serving as "governor" for Missouri, Chairman of the Board of Governors, Regent and Vice President. In 1976, the American College of Physicians designated him as a "Master." He published 24 scientific medical articles and wrote "Aging, The Way It Is," "Still Whistling at 85" and a World War II account called "One Man's World War II." In retirement, he fly fished at the Flat Rock Club in Idaho and photographed prairie and mountain wild flowers. Memberships include: American Board of Internal Medicine, Alpha Omega Alpha, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and the Kansas City Country Club. Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, August 21, at the St. Luke's Hospital Chapel, Kansas City, MO, Seating is Limited. A Gathering of friends and family will be held at 3 p.m. after the services at Claridge Court, 8101 Mission Rd., Prairie Village, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Charity of the Donor's Choice. (Arrangements: D.W. He was a hero and a role model. I've always admired grandpa for his talents and his appreciation of the countryside. At times, I will catch a fish or the wind will brush my face while I'm down on the family's land, and I'll think of MAX. He was a great man who did great things and left a great legacy. I will miss him.
