MICHAEL GRAY Obituary

Michael Ray Gray, 60, of Liberty, MO, passed away January 22, 2015, under the care of a compassionate KU medical staff, with family at his side. Mike was born December 31, 1954, in Marshall, MO, the son of Kermit and Marie Gray. Despite humble beginnings, Mike had a very successful career in business management. His career with Wal-Mart spanned three decades and five states, retiring as a District Manager in 2009. Following Wal-Mart, Mike worked for H&R Block and in 2013 was Franchise Integration Manager of the Year. Mike enjoyed spoiling his wife, children, and the endings of movies. He did not like long stories with irrelevant details. His hobbies included golfing and the sport of haggling with car salesmen. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Lana Gray; daughter, Cassie Gray (favorite); son and daughter- in-law, Ryan and Mandy Gray; grandson, Knox Gray, and a second grandson due in March. Mike also leaves behind brother, Don Shaw and wife Diana; sister, Sylvia Donius and husband Lee; brother-in-law, Brian Hewitt and wife Mary Pat; and mother-in-law Carolyn Hewitt; as well as other family members, many friends, and co-workers who will miss him greatly. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm, followed by a service celebrating Mike's life at 3:00 pm, on Wednesday, January 28, at the Park Lawn Northland Chapel, I-35 at State Route 291, in Liberty. A family graveside service will be Thursday, January 29, at King City Cemetery, King City, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Ararat Shrine Hospital Telemedicine for Kids, 5100 Ararat Drive, Kansas City, MO 64129. You may share a message with the family or sign an on-line guest book via www.parklawnfunerals.com. Arrangements: Park Lawn Northland Chapel (816) 781-8228.

Mike was our district manager at Walmart in Jamestown. He had a heart and was easy to talk to. Mike was the best district manager I had in the 20 years I worked at Walmart.

Lana, Ryan and Cassie,

So many fond memories of the Fargo days. Mike made work and life in the great white North bearable. Working with Mike was a true honor and pleasure. He taught me much and when we weren't working together, catching up with Mike at meetings was always a highlight.

Missed him these last few years and so sorry to hear of his passing.

God's blessing to you all.

You have my deepest sympathy. As they say the good die young, and Mike was the best. I looked forward to his visits to Marshall, Mo. Wal-Mart. After lunch he would always drive through the park and have a story to tell of his younger days. He was a great merchant, and I learned a lot from him over the years. Rest in peace old friend. Mike was my DM in Kansas City. He would come into the store about once a week and would crack jokes at the morning meeting. He was a great business man but you could tell how sincere and caring he was, you weren't just another associate with Mike you were a person! Sorry for your loss.

Mike and I were colleagues at Wal-mart and worked together in Region 7. Kansas City was always a favorite spot for meetings and Mike always did a famous job of hosting all of us District Managers. Mike raised, nurtured, and mentored many young ASM's and SM's truly making a difference in their lives and lives of their families. I don't know that he ever received the recognition that he deserved for doing such. It's the small, unsexy things that you do for people everyday that truly make a difference. Mike will be missed. Rest in peace. Prayers and blessings to the family.

I'll miss Mike. He was a good friend and great District Manager. He was my DM at the Chillicothe, MO Walmart for many years when I was a manager. I will miss his yearly stop for mushrooms. He will be missed.

January 27, 2015

Lana, I am so sorry to hear about Mike's passing. He was far too young with so much to live for. His success in life was an inspiration for us all. Hard work and focus, coupled with innate ability should be rewarded. Mike not only succeded in that regard, but the true measure of the man is the stability of his family. Your marriage with him of 39 years speaks for itself. Mike and I were not close pals due to our difference in age while growing up, but even after years of not seeing each other, it would always seem as if it had been only weeks. Mike will be sorely missed by all.
Sincerely,
Jerry, Lani, and family
