Michael South Obituary

Michael Dennis South
November 22, 1944 - September 13, 2022
Overland Park, Kansas - Michael Dennis South, 77, of Overland Park, Kan., died at KU Medical Center on September 13, 2022. He was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on November 22, 1944, to the late James and Martha South. On December 15, 1974, Mike married his soulmate and wife of 41 years, Sharon South, who died on November 2, 2016. They enjoyed a long relationship filled with love, humor, and true companionship. Mike had a 44-year career with Hallmark Cards and retired in 2014 He was a steadfast and reliable member of the Hallmark family and was beloved by his co-workers for his subtle humor and mischievous smile. Prior to his career at Hallmark, he served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Mike honorably served from 1963-1969 and was a U.S. Navy Corpsman assigned to a U.S. Marine Corps unit as a front-line medic and first responder. He received numerous accolades because of his service, including a Combat Action Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. He was an enthusiastic dog lover and rescued many dogs in the Kansas City area. His long line of rescuing animals in need includes his latest rescue who survives him, Jazmine, a Corgi/Australian Shepard mix whose robust waistline gives credence to Mike's love of sneaking her treats. Mike was the proud father of Michael Davis (Chauncey) of Kansas City, Kansas, and Mark South (Andrea) of Florence, Kentucky. He had three grandsons, Alexander Davis, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Sullivan Ford and Clayton Ford, both of Kansas City, Kansas. Mike is survived by his twin sister, Linda (South) Matheny of Lenox, IA. Mike was a life-long resident of the Kansas City area and in his later years enjoyed his weekly ritual of frequenting local restaurants to satisfy his love of Mexican food and BBQ. He was a caring and selfless man who would give every penny to family and friends in need. Because of his predilection to give all of his money to those in need, his late wife put him on a strict allowance of $20 a week (which he used to buy forbidden sweet treats). After his wife's passing, he reveled in carrying as much cash and buying what he wanted just because he could – his way to continue the delightful cheeky back and forth between him and his late wife. A celebration of life will take place October 8th from 2:00-4:00 pm at Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS 66215. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers you consider a donation in his memory to the Pet Connection https://www.thepetconnection.net/ or Safe Home http://www.safehome-ks.org/ .
