Obituary published on Legacy.com by Vincent Funeral Home - West Point on Mar. 10, 2026.
John Wayne "Rabbit" South, 85, a lifelong resident of King & Queen County, went to be with the Lord on March 9, 2026. He was born on August 15, 1940, to the late John T. and Lillian C. South.

Wayne retired from the telephone company of Gloucester after 31 years, never missing a single day from work. He was a member of Olivet Baptist Church where he served as trustee and deacon. Wayne was a member of the Central King & Queen Fire Department where he served as chief for over 40 years. He was president of Little Plymouth Hunt Club for over 40 years and enjoyed many days of hunting and fellowship with his hunting buddies.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret C. South; a sister, Marlene S. Vannoy and brothers-in-law, William B. Carlton and James C. Gresham. Very special thanks to all who visited him and to a loving caregiver, Barbara Nworgu.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14th at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point, VA 23181. Interment will follow in Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o William B. Carlton, treasurer, PO Box 25, King & Queen Courthouse, VA 23085.

I worked with Wayne "pudding" as I knew him, he was great guy and always a pleasure to be around. Went hunting with him once and I killed a deer and had it mounted. Always tried to keep in touch with Wayne and visited him at home and other places. RIP Wayne no more pain.
